I agree with every beer on that list. Heady is over-rated in the sense that I'm not sure it should be the #1 beer in the world. It's good, definitely top 50-100, but not sure about #1. One thing I do know, though, is that it's 100x better than DFH 90. He's way off on that.

And I liked his blurb about Oberon at the beginning. Personally, that beer should be on this list. Being a Midwesterner myself, I hate when people get all slappy over this beer. It's so mediocre for a wheat ale.

About two months ago, I started a thread stating that I just don't understand the hype behind Heady Topper. Not just that it's the #1 DIPA on Beer Advocate, but that it is the #1 overall beer on BA. In my post, I opined that really fresh DFH 90-Minute is somewhat comparable to the can of HT that I enjoyed (yes, I enjoyed it quite a bit!). Needless to say, I got flamed and the thread was deleted. While I don't agree that Old Rasputin is over-rated (it is a spectacular imperial stout), it is refreshing to see someone state the exact same thing that I presented in my post about HT.

Man that's rough going from WI to Utah beer wise must be quite the transition.

Everyone likes Old Rasputin because it's cheap. I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't like it. Bear Republic Big Black Stout is much better and it's the same price.

Although...the article is pretty on the mark. Writer didn't diss Old Rasputin if you read it carefully.

Or a zillion DIPAs you can get in California fresh vs either trading or traveling to Vermont for a beer. I'm sure Heady Topper is great. It just isn't practical to have all the time without trading - and when you don't live in a place that gets beer people want to trade for - like me, in the DC area, which gets good distribution but nothing you can't find elsewhere - then you just drink what you can and be happy!

But is it truly overrated? Most people I talk with acknowledge that is the best of the BMC beers, not anything beyond that.

And I've never had someone tell me that Miller High Life is a great beer. Favorite of the BMC, sure I've heard/seen that, but to say it is a great beer and be overrated is a different conversation.

Agree. He isn't saying the beer is necessarily bad, just overrated. I agree big-time about his take on Heady/other hard-to-get IIPAs and even agree with some of what he is saying about Raspy.

I also raised an eyebrow at this - though I can understand someone feeling this way if they generally prefer their IPAs East Coast.

His larger point about standing in line, though, is spot on. That's not to say that Heady isn't worth standing in line for, but that is to say that, if you're the sort of person who doesn't like to spend time waiting in line for beer, then you probably consider most any beer that requires extended queuing to be overrated. Especially since ratings for a beer seem to go up in direct proportion to the difficulty of obtaining it.

Articles like these are really funny to me. Everything said is overstated and exaggerated, but that makes for a bit of the article's humor. In all honestly though, I found the list to be spot on except except for the inclusion of Old Rasputin. I feel OR warrants the hype and isn't really over-hyped as the article suggests. It's just consistently awesome and not too over-the-top for my tastes. Are there better Imperial Stouts out there? Yes. Are most of these said stouts available year round or easy to acquire? No...

Great article. True, popularity does not mean GOOD. (Look at Starbucks.)
