I wouldn't turn down a homebrew as long as that person doesn't brew crap beer. But since they are on this forum they should have standards that they try to achieve in their own product so the likelihood of getting a crap beer probably isn't an issue.

receiving the fruit of somebodys homebrewing passion is always welcome. I tend to send samples of batches that I am proud of out in trades as extras as well.

I will generally only throw in a homebrew as an extra if: 1) I'm also able to knock out a few of the other traders wants as extras; and 2) the homebrew has been well received by other beer geeks, other than myself. Sometimes I'm even asked to throw in a few homebrews as extras by the trader, which is always a plus.

If any of you that are looking to try my sours are going to be at the KBS release let me know. I don't have a lot in bottle right now but will have a few there and probably a growler.

Although we call'em "extras," the truth is that in practice they're not really extras anymore. They're pretty much expected. With that said, I would consider homebrew to be an extra "extra." If we're trading whales, and I ship you whales+local extras, and you ship me whales+homebrew -- I would find that a bit tacky. But if you ship me whales+local extras+homebrew -- that's all good. I welcome and encourage homebrews as extras, but I'd find it a bit off-putting if homebrews excusively constituted the extras.

Yeah, and technically so are tips. Do you consider tipping optional when you go to a restaurant or bar?

The point is that extras are expected these days. If you're agreeing to a trade, do you bother telling your trade partner that you're going to be including extras? Probably not. But if you were planning NOT to include extras, I bet you'd probably let him know. Why? Because they're expected. It's almost implied when you make a trade that you'll both throw extras in.

Anyway, you're getting bogged down in the details, and ignoring reality. In practice, extras are pretty much expected.

Why are you bringing up tips? Try to stay focused.

I type two words, and I'M getting bogged down in the details!?!? Where did I say that extras weren't expected? My point was that locals, whales, homebrew, coasters, a pint glass - they're EXTRAS. It's best not to overthink EXTRAS.

I'm not sure that you really said anything in this post.

Extras are expected. While extras can come in many forms, they generally come in the form of commercial beer. Therefore, people generally expect extra commercial beers when they make a trade. Homebrews are not that. If you're giving homebrew in lieu of commercial beer as extras, there's probably more than a few people here that would consider it a bit cheap/tacky.

And that's my point. You're getting bogged down in what extras are "supposed" to mean, as opposed to what they "actually" mean in practice -- which is more relevant.

Extras/surprises are my favorite part of trading. (I have a trade in progress now where I asked entirely for nothing specific, just 'local surprises'.) Love 'em all, including homebrews.

Here's the take-home message of what I said:

    Full stop.

I expect what I traded for. Everything else is an extra. I might be surprised if there were no extras, but I wouldn't find it off-putting or be upset.

I typically send out homebrew as extras when possible. I have gotten numerous positive comments on it. Worst case scenario they never open it or dislike it so it isn't hurting anything.

Hell, I usually bring homebrew to share at brewery releases as well. It's gotten to the point where a few of the regulars are asking about it when they see me (in one case they're asking about a specific named batch of beer).

In any case, as someone who works nights I miss out on the ability to attend the local homebrew club's weeknight meetings, so I love the chance to sample others' homebrew once in a while, be it good or bad.

I would rather have good/great homebrew than crappy locals.

while you are correct that extras are expected there are other criteria. As I am sure you would not be super thrilled if someone sent you a SNPA that you can buy a ton of, or some cheap beer with a crappy rating. There should be an understanding that the extra beers are a thank you and a part of advocacy. If you are an awesome home brewer or brewed a particular good batch why would that be worth the same as a commercial beer? Also, since home brewers typically have a shit ton of home brew I am guessing where they might add 1-2 extras they will either add a home brew on top of that or add 3-4 home brews
