Just picked up a bottle of the Bruery's Hottenroth Berliner Weisse for the first time, with the goal of sharing with friends in the near future. Should I make an effort to get some syrup ready, or is it unecessary?

How much syrup is used per glass? I just got some fun local craft simple syrups.

I've been drinking this on tap for about the past week (hope it doesn't kick soon!), just my opinion, but to me it would be a shame to add any syrup. This beer is just perfect the way it is.

If you really want to try it mit Schuss at least get another bottle so you can try it without as well.
I voted forget the syrup FYI.

i need some of these for a year old bottle of hottenroth. if you look at some of the flavored berliners in a gis search, it's definitely enough to change the color. the green is woodruff, guessing the other is raspberry?

I figure we can sample it both ways from the same bottle if necessary.
The only reason I ask is because the syrup is mentioned on the label of the beer itself
I'll probably be fine without it then. The Bruery's website expands on the label and mentions that the syrup is for those with sweeter tastes.
I think people traditionally serve the beer with a small shot next to the glass of beer

I find Hottenroth to be pleasantly tart and I would not even contemplate putting 'stuff' in this great beer.

    Needless to say but YMMV.

    Cheers!

Sorry, let me clarify. I don't find this beer to so tart that syrup would be of any beneft. There certainly are som versions that require syrup (Bear Republic Tartare). The Hottenroth really seems to have the perfect amount of tartness. Bottom line, buy more!

If I'm ever drinking a berliner and they have a syrup they're serving with it i'll ask for a 2nd glass and pour some of it in that one and add the syrup to it so that I can try it without committing my entire glass to being syruped. Not once have I ever found that I liked it better with the syrup.

Since adding syrup is the tradition in Berlin where the beer is actually from, I wouldn't consider it as ruining the beer. It's all on your personal taste preference. I'd go with what a few others suggested, to try it both without (first), and with. It's a great beer on it's own, and you'll likely enjoy it either way. Feel free to drink while using nunchuks. Good luck.

I always liked to think of my avatar as Raph, but I can see how one might also think his mask was orange

there was a little thing at the bottom of the page that had this picture that indicated that it was indeed raspberry :grinning:

anyone have thoughts on if hottenroth's sourness increases with age?

Having tried the stuff in Berlin years ago (20+) and again in the last few years, my preference for syrup is woodruff - though I will generally drink a Berliner without any most times.
