People bitch about ticket releases, too, because they tend to bring in more out of market people who wouldn't make the drive just to stand in line but will make the drive when they have guaranteed bottles. Also, getting bottles then becomes a matter of luck from getting through on the website vs. the "effort" of getting up early and standing in line... or whatever.

There's no universal "good" solution to these small batch releases. There's only a choice negative consequences you're willing to accept =/

I agree 100%. I have participated in several of Alesmith's Brown Paper Tickets releases. You can still have a special event on the official "release" day (flights, apparel, etc) but provide the purchaser a window for pickup. Especially with GToM going on, this could be very beneficial. Also, cuts down on mules & proxies if you demand a photo ID at time of pickup.

For all you locals who still like standing in line, the brewery can then release any unclaimed bottles after the pick-up window has ended. Or, like Alesmith, New Glarus could hold un-announced "Garage Sales" in the Beer Depot with a variety of "unclaimed" bottles. It's a great way to reward locals/regulars.

I understand the whole "let's just keep it cool guys" mentality, but eventually the hype surrounding certain releases demands that the brewery/patrons develop a set of rules that allows people to get their beer safely, in a timely manner, and without conflict.

With the hype VSB received and given how cheap it is, I think you are a bit short-sighted in thinking this can't turn into a complete shitshow. Have past releases gone well? Sure, but that can be said for any major release. Eventually there comes a time when demand and hype overcome the constraints a brewery only release has. I'm not saying this is the year for NG, but the crowds will be bigger, people will be there earlier, and inevitability, negative stories surrounding the event will surface on here and elsewhere when people don't get what they feel they are entitled to.

I don't think I implied that this would never turn into a shitshow.

What I implied is that there is no reason for NG to change their system for R&D releases until such time that it does turn into a shitshow.

While they might be able to anticipate increased demand, I think that it would be a poor use of their time to try and figure out how to plan for something that may or may not happen.

Normally I'd completely agree with a statement like that, but seeing what disasters can happen when not anticipated, I think it's in every breweries best interest nowadays to think ahead and not simply wait until a "$hitshow" occurs. It's just smart business, like paying for insurance.

Just have it during the Taste, and very early the next morning. No crowds for me.

I think if this release turns into a shitshow, New Glarus will stop doing GTMW releases. They don't want their small town to have to put up with that nonsense. And the brewery is not set up for it.

Maybe they go Brown Paper Tickets, but I think they would do silent or announced-day-of releases, a la Bell's.

    Shit. Shit. Shit.

I thought it was the 9th? I couldn't tell you why i think that, though. I swear i read it somewhere, but... 70hr work weeks are making my brain fizzle.

This has the potential to be a complete shit show. The difference this year is now demand has exceeded supply. Anytime you have more people than bottles available you have butthurt people. And they are the most vocal people on the forums. Bitching that the system sucks, pointing out any flaws whether legitimate or not.

In the previous years there were more bottles than people. The R&D sour fruit (or VSB as you like to call it) craze didnt hit until around November and then it took off.

this is starting to feel like one of those building momentum from a grain of sand, deals.

every new post is topping the last with paranoia and speculation. it's THIS that drives a shitshow.

    No.

It sold out all three days last year, all four days in 2012, and in 2010 (one day only). Demand exceeded supply every time they released R&D beers, excluding Golden Ale and the original Two Women Lager (yum!). If people don't act like assholes (a pipe dream, I know) it won't be a shitshow.

Pretty much all release methods (group tickets like DLD, lottery like Upland/Perennial, reserve tickets like Founders) are ways of forcing people to not act like assholes. Just saying.

Disagree. They are a way to (try to) limit the number of assholes that show up and a way to ensure the assholes that do show up get what they came for. Although that did not work so well for DLD 2011 (I think) where the tickets were easily counterfeited.

In 2012 I showed up 15 min after it went on sale (on Saturday). The line was already gone and there were stacks of cases. So yes it has always sold out. I guess I was more referring to the initial wave. I have a feeling this year there will be more people in line before the doors open, that seems to be the point where everything goes downhill.

Every time I read a new post in this thread it makes me think it's just adding to the craziness and now I'm going to have to arrive even earlier. Who wants to camp out with me the night before????

It's not like there are a few thousand people posting here. It's the same 10 or so people, all speculating. Time will tell how many people are willing to drag their asses out of bed to get to the middle of BFE by 10am in the morning.

Can't tell if joking or not, but it is truly comments like this that get taken out of context, and helps fuel the shitshow fire. Somebody is camping out, I guess we need to too!

    Everybody calm down.

I showed up last year Friday at 11:30am, with no line, and there were still two cases of VSB left. Went back Saturday morning prior to heading to the great taste, got there at 8:30, and was handed a ticket that was number 20 something (23 I think).

No need to get paranoid. It's just beer. There will be enough if you show up before 10:00am. No need to piss New Glarus by showing up the night before.

Definitely joking. Thought that was apparent but joking/sarcasm doesn't always come through as well on the internet.
