Yep. Which is funny, because when I lived in Wisconsin (92-94), they were as far from craft as possible.

Dont they own some Canadian breweries/brands too? I thought that was where the name came from.

Forgetting Minhas in my original post was a huge oversight. They may be single-handedly responsible for me even being a beer drinker at all. Berghoff Dark was the first beer I liked enough to drink regularly.

I drink Boston Lager on draft at many places I go. When it's a fresh keg you can tell, almost as much as with a fresh IPA.

It's also a no-nonsense value play for drinking at home.

Did I mention they've had freshness dating for years?

And they make the coolest beer glasses I've seen to date.

They own the US rights to the Labatt brand - purchased from AB-InBev, which had to spin it off by order of the Feds over anti-trust concerns (not to get too political again ). Happened almost simultaneously as the Genesee purchase. Most of the Labatt brands are still imported from Canada (though brewed by Molson, to meet another US DoJ requirement)- so in the case of Labatt they're more "importer" than "brewer", and own no Canadian breweries.

Yeah, sad case. Minhas/Huber might be the old-line brewery with a worst reputation now than it was at the beginning of the craft era (with Cold Spring running a close second), what with the loss of first the Augsburger and then the Berghoff lines, and the change in ownership/management.

So does that eliminate many Belgian breweries that use candy sugar or corn syrup to lighten the bodies of their beer? A pure malt quad or tripel usually sucks.

They were also well over the cap for barrels produced. I'm not a fan of Yuengling at all, but if the choice is between Yuengling and BMC, I go with the former every time since they don't invest millions every year trying to crush craft beer through advertisement and buyouts.

This is an old debate, and I'll tell you that (as we're already seeing in this thread) Yuengling is fervently defended by some people out there. I've seen more heated debates over how good and craft-like Yuengling is than I have seen people defending true craft breweries that take heat like DFH, Rogue, or SA.

Either way, the owner of Yuengling has gone on record as calling his beer craft before, whatever that's worth.

never said that, just said that yuengling is pretty damn shitty, and is not a quality beer, nor is it any higher quality or better tasting than a typical bmc beer.

Sam Adams is a very consistent brewery and puts out generally above average to very good beers. There's absolutely room in the craft brewing world for at least one relatively large craft brewer that makes reliably good stuff and can be easily found just about anywhere.

Yes, they are very big on freshness too. They actually buy back the outdated beer(atleast here and around new england they do). It's always a safe bet buying a SA product...from the shelf or of the tap.

Now that Noble Pils is year round I hope a lot of bars carry it. It's the perfect gateway beer!

I suspect that the Tampa airport will see an increase in traffic because of this. BAs from the northeast traveling to south america need a stop and they'll probably start picking tampa if available.

Yeah, I personally think it is closer to what Boston Lager tasted like when it first came out.

    Ahh, Stegmaier...

I remember stealing a case of warm Stegmaier cans from a neighborhood old drunk guy's back porch in the summer of '72. Me and two friends drank the whole (warm) case. I remember I ended up eating too much at a White Castle but I don't remember much else about that night...

although, I do believe that's when my intestinal problems began?

Thanks for making the country realize that you dont have to drink cheaply made, overpriced piss water just because they have the largest advertising budget.

Quality of beer is subjective of course. I can only think of a few craft beers with rice and or corn in them. You make it sound like it's quite common. Am I missing something? Edit: Qouted the wrong post, but you get my point.
