Nope, no chocolate in that one. Just chocolate malt. Great beer too.

Had enough to know its not worth 2xUJ.
as a side note, the darkness I had came as an extra.

This thread is one of the few times where the best answer isn't just a link to the most popular American Stouts. I love stouts, but almost every top rated one is a coffee stout or barrel aged.

I wish flavored stouts were their own style. The differences between Obsidian Stout and Bourbon Barrel Mayan Mocha Stout makes it almost meaningless to class them together.

Victory's Storm King and as of two weeks ago Malpais Stout by La Cumbre in New Mexico. La Cumbre is a top notch brewery in Albequerque.

Brooklyn BCS has a somewhat misleading name. It contains a variety of malted barley known as chocolate; it has no actual chocolate or coco in it however.

I really like Anderson Valley's Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout... not sure if you'd count oatmeal stout as straight stout.

Lots of others made great suggestions, but I don't know if anyone mentioned Bell's Special Double Cream Stout or Mad River's Steelhead Extra Stout. The Bell's is under-rated in my opinion - I like it better than either their Kalamazoo or Imperial Stouts. The Mad River is a great example of a traditional stout that is just beautifully crafted.

I don't like how "American" is at the END of that list....Comrade...

My go-to "straight" stout is SN's offering. Cheap(ish), easy to find, and tasty.

I did put a disclaimer in my post on Shackamaxamum. Just wanted people to know about it. Under the radar if you are not in Philly.......Good beer for $40 a case but with 2 years its amazing.

    Enjoy

I can't wait to have Mephistopheles again, I had one that was pretty fresh and it was like drinking paint thinner it was so hot... I have another one that I'm going to sit on until my toddlers are in high school.

Good call, Philly brewing is definitely underrated (not to say they're spectacular, but they get 0 love), same is actually true of Penn Brewing as well.
