As long as "Kleen-ex" means tissue, and "Band-aid" means sticky bandage, "domestic" will mean BMC.

FYI.. the term domestic is came from much more of the wholesale universe than it did from the consumer universe. Back in the day, "domestic" did refer to the mainline, adjuct lagers that we all know and love. Within the domestic category their were premium and super premium sections as well. Believe it or not, Bud/coors/miller are all still referred to as "premium domestics." There are a bunch of new categories that are now used to but they just haven't come out into the general nomenclature yet. The beer industry data is very categorized, analyzed, and reported on.. they simply needed to have ways to distinguish the different components of the industry for the reports... restaurants and bars simply used the terms the wholesalers did and priced accordingly.

How about: just "Beer" a brief description of style, alcohol and orgin, then price accordingly

I genuinely didn't know that "domestic" meant "macro" in the bar world until the first time I sat down at a bar with a buy one/get one special on "all domestic beers". I was really confused when I ordered a Victory and they said "that's not domestic," and even more confused when I got the same answer with SNPA. Frustrated, I finally asked what beers they considered to be domestic, and two of the ones they listed were brewed in Canada. At the time, I still believed that it was just that particular bar being odd. I had no idea this was the norm.

Bars: where the word for "made within the country" is interchangeable with "made in a foreign country". This is why I drink. At home.

This is the exact reason. There will always need to be a way to distinguish the different segments for wholesalers and retailers so that they may make decisions on what to carry, where to put it, how to price it etc.

Kind of like the use of "session beer" on this site?

Interestingly I actually have seen a few new bars open up that have an awesome selection and simply have 4-5 different categories under which beer is listed such as:

    Light, crisp, refreshing
    Hoppy
    Dark stouts and porters
    Fruity, funky, and Belgian

I think that doing it this way is much better anyway because people can look for what they want stylistically.

Maybe they should retitle the BMC's to "domesticated" beers since they are so tame.

Then on the tavern/bar/pub advertisements s they can have domesticated buckets $10 and also American Wild beers happy hours for XX per pour! Now we're talkin! Go horseblanket or go home!

So you're saying you live in Delaware and you hadn't ever seen this logo until about a year or so ago?

Domestic locals is a bit redundant, just go with locals.

If you want a chuckle, look at what those "domestics" actually are. In my experience, few of them are actually produced by American owned companies.

Sam Adams is an import but Budweiser is domestic? Now that's comedy.

And none of this is likely to change anytime soon. "Domestic" and "Import" at this point really just means "Inexpensive beer" and "Premium beer."

It's also an indicator that the place you're at doesn't care about beer. Most places with those terms usually have a handful of AALs and maybe SABL, SNPA, and something more if you're lucky. Maybe some "Sam Summah" or something along those lines. Around here, the standard beer that even the crappy chains have is Lagunitas IPA, so it could be worse.
