What I used to think was going to be a fad, wild and sour beers, look to be here to stay. Admittedly, I have overwhelmingly been converted to the mystique of these complex and unpredictable beers. Drinking commercial examples and brewing them at home, it seems almost a journey into the intricacies of the all that makes up these styles - from the brewing process, microbes, barrels, aging, blending, and cellar capabilities, it takes beer to another level.

Having said this, there are a number of American brewers well established and renowned for their AWAs - Jolly Pumpkin, Russian River, Cascade, New Belgium, Allagash, The Bruery, Lost Abbey to name a few. Some breweries like Crooked Stave, Hill Farmstead & Jester King are also well on their way to implanting themselves among the old guard aforementioned. But what up & comers... what other rising stars are there out in the country that we should be keeping an eye out for in the wild beer world?

It seems as if Side Project and Sante Adairus are moving up quickly in the ranks. And can't forget New Glarus either- they do every style well it seems, but their wild ales and sours are really well received.

DeGarde seems to be killing it as well, especially with their berliners.

Absolutely. New Glarus can do no wrong. It's almost criminal that they can have a world class lagerbier and a whole line-up of fruit sours coming out of the same place.

Also, Bullfrog is making a nice comeback, it seems.

Pizza Boy's one to look out for as well.

Is there anyone doing them poorly?

Off the top of my head I can't think of any truly awful sours I've had.

    Cranberry "lambic" maybe?

I've definitely had some from smaller breweries that are less than ideal. Plus, some of the breweries specializing in Brett can definitely have major ups and downs...even with the exact same beer and batch. Butyric acid and diacetyl flavors can show up one day and be gone the next month.
There are far more that are good than bad, though. I think the bold sour/tart notes are almost like massive hops in that they can cover up many other issues.

OEC brewing in Connecticut. Kind of insane what they've been able to accomplish so far. Won't be long before they are mobbed and well known to the east coast beer fanatics.

    Also what Cavedave said.

Tired Hands. They seem to stay on the tamer end of the funk spectrum, but everything I've had from them (wild or not) has been really solid.

Seems like everything's happening beer-wise down in your neck of the woods. Need that to start spreading up here a little more!
