How did it compare to the Pt5 for you?

The answer to best stout (non-BA) is always Darkness!!!

edit: And for something easier to get, Founders Imperial Stout, followed by Ten Fidy. Old Raspy is good too, but not top 3 for me (not that that's an insult).

Dark Lord is great too, but you have to be able to tolerate intense sweetness.

It was quite good, but not the liquid gold that was PT5

Deschutes Obsidian for straight stout and Founders for Imperial, it is not a hard call to make.

Penn brewing has been on a real bad streak ever since their head brewer left in like 06 or something, they never recovered. I wouldn't buy that stuff on discount.

The best stout that is not barrel-aged, flavored or a double/imperial is:

    Sierra Nevada

Bell’s Kalamazoo is a close second

There are a handful of stouts brewed in PA far superior to Sierra Nevada in price and taste.

Bells is like it never happened, A close second to nothing.

I don't think I saw Hel & Verdoemenis has been mentioned yet, so that. Rather hard to find, but delicious.

I never had them 10 years ago, but I had the chance to sample their flagships and their Chocolate stout, and while they aren't blowing anyone away, I thought they were all pretty well-made German styles, and the Chocolate had a great aroma to it.

well in the 5-6% abv range I say taddy porter. just because stout is porter, and I love to point that out. lol.
RIS is not what I think of when i think porter/stout less than 7% abv.

yes I know the brewer can names as they will....I brewer porters all the time all over the map abv wise....

So many to choose from and lots of them have already been mentioned:

    Zhukov
    WWS
    Plead the fifth
    Regular ole yeti
    Expedition and founders imperial
    Green flash double stout

    All good choices!

I'd probably have to say Luscious, but since that's nearly impossible to get it's probably Plead the 5th, or maybe Ten Fidy.
