Has anyone else give non-BA's, especially parents, sips of their crafts and gotten an enjoyable/memorable reaction?

I've recently been getting a kick out of giving my dad tastes of my beers and watching him assess what he's witnessing. Best examples- verbatim- include The Bruery's Tart of Darkness (*sniffs, sips, winces and makes an 'O' face* "You like that stuff?"), Dogfish Head's Kvasir ("Not bad, is that a cider?"), North Coast's Grand Cru ("Smells like whiskey!"), and BCBS ("I can smell that from here, no thanks").

Seeing as New Castle Brown Ale is his favorite, these beers have been quite a leap for his imagination. Sometimes he was right on the money (Grand Cru) and sometimes he was understandably mislead (Kvasir), but it's always been entertaining to witness him give his palate a workout.

When I was just getting into sours during a break from college I split a bottle of rodenbach grand cru with them and my sister. Don't know why I thought it was a good idea as none of them could handle the sourness and questioned how I could enjoy it.

Edt: I thought since they like all sorts of wine it wouldn't be an issue. That was before I learned that sours are the worst beer to give wine drinkers, since it can taste like spoiled wine to them.

After college, I left some DFH India Brown in my parents' fridge. A few weeks later, I was talking on the phone with my dad and he says, "Oh. I drank one of your beers. That Dog Shit Head? Awful!"

My dad's name is Tom. So, if I see an interesting beer with his name on it, I'll grab it to share. He is always critical that my beers are too high in regard to ABV. I gave him a 3-4 oz pour of Maine Beer Co.'s Mean Old Tom. He finishes it and five minutes later says, "Man, I feel that already." (Mean Old Tom is 6.5% ABV).

    I love my dad.

Mhm, curious. I guess it depends on what kind of wine. Where I live (major wine growing region) a lot of wine is relatively "sour". Too much so for me tbh, stuff makes me nauseaous.

I'm generally wary of giving beer to people when I don't know how open to trying out new things they are, especially given the whole misconception about the German Reinheitsgebot that makes a bunch of people believe it would somehow be a quality assurance and that everybody else is putting "all those chemicals!!11!!1!1one" (whatever that means, everything is chemical after all) their beer (not to mention that the Reinheitsgebot says absolutely jacksquat about additives post-brewing).

I did give my father a Hoegaarden as part of his birthday present, no idea what he thought of it. I did give my brother a BrewDog 5 AM Saint last year when I got into the stuff, he was digging it.

Mother: Tries to pretend she likes it, and tries to pick out flavor profiles in the smell
Dad: Before going dry, he was actually starting to enjoy some craft beer a lot. Mostly darker stuff and sour stuff, not IPA's. His favorite, by far was Brooklyn's Black Chocolate Stout, so I guess he has good taste.

Wife: Hates beer, has no taste for beer, has no nose for beer. Every single beer I gave her for the first 8 years of our relationship, whether it was a stout, an IPA, or whatever, the response was "It tastes/smells like beer." Then she discovered sours...of course, my wife has to decide that she likes the most expensive possible sector of the craft beer experience.

My mom has also decided to love sours. I mean, she'll drink just about anything (BCBS is the exception I can think of), but she loves sours. My dad and I always teaser her that she inadvertently has very expensive taste.

My Dad said Cuvee Renee smelled and tasted like vomit

Dad recently had UCBC Cuvee Peche and liked it a lot surprisingly

I left a BCBS in my Dad/Stepmoms fridge a couple years ago. He put about 2/3 the contents of the bottle in an empty Bud can to make beer can chicken (I know I know) and drank the rest. He said it was over the top for his tastes, but he at least finished it (supposedly)

My dad is part of the reason I never drank BMC to begin with - his "cheap" and go-to beers were things like Guinness or Spaten.

That said, he was never a huge craft guy until I started sharing my purchases with him. It used to be that pouring a nitro can of Guinness into a glass and sipping on that was all he wanted in life. I can't even remember the last time he bought that beer now. I love introducing him to new beers just as much as he loves drinking them. Now that's a good relationship.

My mom isn't really a beer fan, but she will try them from time to time. Apparently she liked a bock she had as part of a flight recently. She tends to stick to wine though, and rarely drinks at all to begin with. So I stick with giving beer to the old man.

My mom tasted one of my IPAs, and the exaggerated, just-ate-a-lemon pucker face she made was priceless.

My dad is pushing 80, and he has several bombers and a case of craft beer sitting around the house.

I brought him a Pakos IPA back from Snake River in WY, and I think it was one minute tops before it was in his mug.

He never made the jump to beer geek, but he has been a beer guy for decades.

My father, used to drinking macros, will happily try anything I put in front of him. It seems that he likes it all, though I try to go easy on him. Nothing extreme. My mother, much more used to drinking wine and bloody marys, will try things, and usually makes a "beer face"... though she did like the Super Fuzz on nitro. My wife? If it tastes sweet, malty, chocolaty, coffee, or most importantly- like bourbon, she'll guard it like the cgi'd freak from LoTR. Cited evidence- she tried large sips from my Allagash Curieux and their Black; both received sounds of approval. I spared her my snifter of Burton Baton. That wouldn't end well.

My friends? The few that I'd call friends? They're mostly curious and open-minded about craft, but look to me to make sure they get something they would enjoy.

I gave my mom a Half Acre Heyoka, and when asked how she felt about it she said "isn't that how beer was supposed to taste, bitter and just.. good?" She had only drank High Life up until that point. I love my Mom. She also absolutely adored Zombie Dust & NG Serendipity.

My Dad isn't usually too interested, but my Mom will try just about any beer I offer to her. She's not into craft, but she enjoys some of what I have her try.

My mom is intrigued by anything I drink and wants to try it, she's not a drinker really at all but just enjoys trying new flavors. I guess that's the chef/baker in her. The good news is she appreciates my interest in beers in lives in SC and is going to keep her eye out for any Mexican Cake for me. :grinning:

My Dad is coming around. Me and some friends stayed at his place in New Port Richey and brought some bottles to drink. He enjoyed a stone IRS, some homebrew berliner I made, and even a fresh tocobaga. Mom won't touch it with a ten foot pole.
