Not sure if it's a rumor, but December is what Sam told me they're shooting for right now.

Problems with city over concerns about "grain dust" of all things. That's what I was told early this month.

You've got to watch out for that grain dust! Meanwhile our streets are going to shit. Our children are dumb as bricks. But, hey, gotta worry about that grain dust!

Grain dust is explosive, the concerns are probably ensuring the grain dust/mill is properly separated from the boil kettle/mash.

Yes but this hasn't been a prior concern for other breweries being ok'd by the city...

Probably due to the location is my guess, or at least that's probably what the city would say. Can't have grain dust clouding up Deep Ellum, I mean........c'mon, man!

Those seem like some intelligent guys I wonder who came up with the name "Braindead brewing"

Seems like a terrible name IMO. But shit, what do I know.

Just trying to play devil's advocate, the city/inspectors are almost always the problem, but they may not have designed the layout to properly show the separation between mill and brewhouse. I'm sure they did though, Drew more than knows what he is doing, he is def one of if the not the top brewer in town.

I know of another brewery in Dallas that is having the same issue. The city is having a real issue with the grain dust issue. As somebody said above, grain dust is explosive and having it in a room where electric equipment could throw a spark (even an outlet) and ignite a fire is the concern. Many other cities are not as stringent as Dallas but that is their choice.

Here is some good information on this issue:

    http://www.hazardexonthenet.net/article/26738/Fire-and-explosion-hazards-in-the-drinks-industry.aspx

"Grain dust is combustible and under appropriate conditions can give rise to a dust explosion hazard. In 1997 a dust explosion in a grain storage facility at Blaye, France resulted in the death of 11 personnel and severe structural damage to the installation.

A number of dust explosions have occurred in the Brewing Industry and the biggest single cause of these is dry milling of grain, typically by roll mills. This operation both generates flammable dust clouds within the milling equipment and represents a significant ignition risk."

Dust explosions are scary things. An Imperial Sugar plant blew up in 2008 and killed 14 people. I have no idea how likely they are on a small scale brewing operation but it's certainly an issue worth considering.

The place is the brain child of 3 guys, Jeff Fryman (previously of Common Table), Sam Wynne (ex Flying Saucer and Meddlesome Moth) and Drew Huerter (former brewer at Deep Ellum Brewing). The name was likely a combination of what the 3 of them came up with together. I don't really care what the name of the brewery is, so long as the beer is good. Given the pedigree here, it's hard to imagine it being anything other than stellar.

Hell, you could name your beer Terrible, so long as it tastes good. Oh wait someone already did that.

Clearly, that is a French word and they did not think about the translation over to English.
