To devalue their whale status and give people in Modesto, California an equal shot at getting bottles as Indiana's year-round supporters of the brand? I don't think all of them should have been released at a ticket-only event (or if they were it should have been advertised as such as a lot of attendees probably couldn't have cared less about spending additional money on expensive bottles after the $45 ticket) but I'm also not sure a lottery is a perfect solution either. With a release of so few bottles, I think on-premise consumption release at the two Upland locations would be viable as would just releasing them in the coolers one day without warning, ala Bell's 750 ml releases.

I'm placing the over/under for people from Indiana actually getting bottles at 45.5.

I think maybe you misunderstand. You don't have to send Upland a copy of your driver's license. Your proxy needs to have a copy of your license or some other generally-accepted form of ID with your name on it so the Upland folks will have reasonable proof that the person is actually acting on your behalf.

I sadly have to agree with what has already been mentioned. I dont know what is stopping thousands of people from all over the country entering everyone they know in this. Even if they dont have any direct way of picking up the bottle. And if they are chosen, then said bottle just sits there until the window has expired. How will that botle be distributed? Will another name be drawn? What if this is the case many times over? It should be at least set up for entries from Indiana and surrounding states only. Dare I say that it should also be changed to the person whose name is drawn HAS to be the one to pick it up? I mean, if you really want one, why is it too much to ask for you to pick up a bottle from a brewery only release?

How long has Upland been producing these lambics? I know it's been at least since '09, if not before then. I'm just wondering why they still only have the capacity to produce a couple hundred bottles. I would think with the program becoming so successful as to require a lottery system for bottles, they would try to expand production for many of the reasons listed above. Does anyone have any insight about why they haven't?

They are expanding. Their old facility will now be used solely for lambics.

Gotcha, so they're just not quite ready to start pumping out more yet? Glad to hear about the expansion. Anything that puts more Persimmon in my cellar is a definite plus! :grinning:

Right, they "moved" but are "expanding" their barrel aging program. They wanted to keep that part separate to ensure that they don't have QC issues down the road due to wild yeasts. Or at least that is my understanding of it.

I'm not sure of the date, but the program had to have started at least as early as '06/'07. I want to say the earliest capped and corked bottles came out in '07 as I had one when I was still apartment-dwelling in Indy, and we've owned a house since early/mid-'08. I had a couple of the Strawberry bottles from that batch that I chanced/lucked in to over the last year and they'd aged amazingly well. A Blueberry from the same batch hadn't.

I know in the case of Sour Reserve, since it's a blend of several years of barrels, future yields may and probably will be higher but I'm guessing they didn't set back too many barrels each year as the program started if only due to capacity. As Al said, the new facility will mean an increased program for the sours, which is definitely good news as Upland does them just about as well as anyone in the U.S., and getting them more easily will be nice for we locals.

if it's anything like the lambic reservations, any unclaimed bottles become available for purchase by locals at the brewery after the reservation pick-up window has passed... i know i've already stopped by to purchase some of the unclaimed blackberry lambics from this last go-round

Lambics, or "lambics"? Because these aren't really lambics, and it's vaguely annoying that they call them that. If they purchased a coolship and will be doing real spontaneous fermentation, then I'll cut them some slack, but otherwise I really wish they'd knock it off.

They are changing the name to "Upland" lambics.

They didn't with SR1, but I am curious as to what happens if a significant number of the people who win are from out of state and can't secure a proxy. If they have a lot of bottles left, would they save them all?
