See that's what I thought! But holding the glass (at least from this manufacturer) it's much thinner than a shaker, and has a slightly tailored inward appearance before forming a lip. The covers about 1/8th the area of the base, while the rest is exposed. Lip is tailored thin.

It's a bit like a stemless wine glass, but with less contouring and a pronounced lip. I would imagine this is what causes the "surprise" factor, since the smooth tailoring isn't super visible and the lip doesn't look as pronounced as it actually is.

Though I will be using my Teku for all first glass beers at home still, the can was much easier and really just as viable for IPAs aromas for sitting on the couch watching a movie and typing something.

I went to a "class" on beer & glasses and we did side by side for aroma, carbonation, temperature, etc and i was very surprised by the difference in the bar pint glasses vs the set below. I like them better than the Libbey due to them being thin (on purpose) because it keeps the beer colder longer (i was surprised by this vs a thicker glass that retains heat in the glass and transfers to the beer) but the Libbey's are more durable.

I've had this set for 2 1/2 year (the ipa glasses since they came out) and haven't ever broken one. I put them in the dishwasher and they've always come out fine. I'm using them prob 4 nights a week too. Not sure why yours are shattering all of the time? p.s. love the avitar!

Either way the "bar" pint glass will KILL your aroma, which in turn kills the taste.

Can you explain the part I put in bold please? Also, what do you mean by smooth tailoring? The inward slope of the walls?

Did you buy the glasses directly from Spieglau @Beestin , or from DFH / whoever else? Because mine from Spieglau cracked real quick, but not so much with the branded glass. No clue why, since I assume Spieglau manufactures regardless. Or just stupid old luck.

I saw a set of two of the Spieglau IPA glasses at target for like $24 - waaaay too rich for my blood. I'm sure they're awesome but I don't care for the look and I too was concerned at how fragile they felt. @Beestin - that's good info on glass retaining heat though - I never considered that.

@Hop-Droppen-Roll Uh, a bit tough to explain without a picture. But you know how a shaker expands outward, rather the inward? This goes straight up until the glass contours in (the slope of the walls, yeah, but done somewhat subtly before the marked visual note as well) and begins to cover the base. So in effect, staring down at the glass, you'd see 7/8th of a circle of beer straight on, and 1/8th through glass (where the lip covers).

I wonder if any breweries offer branded ones on their websites? I would like to give one of these a try sometime.

No idea! I got mine from Tommy's Pizza in PA, which had a full color logo and b/w text on it. Very pretty, and holds up well under washing. I imagine if a pizza joint that sells good craft beer brands them, some brewery already has! Plus only $3 or $4, which was a happy surprise.

To be honest, I like living life on the edge. I like my glassware in a bikini thats falling off. Yes, many people would deem this "innapropriate" glassware... but I have a problem, and the first step is admitting it

Short answers: yes, I drink out of the glass if at all possible so that I can see and smell the beer, and no, I don't use a chilled glass because I like most beers to warm as I drink them anyway, and the glass just slows that process.

Long answer to the use of glasses--take a look and see how deep the rabbit-hole goes...

It sounds like you are describing a Willi Becher glass (that's the name of the shape, fwiw)-

    is that it?

ETA- never mind- I went back all the way in the convo and saw it was a can glass. Either way, these are extremely nice glasses, too.

Yeah, that's not it, but neat looking glass! I also misestimated the amount of glass coverage at work; it is much more like 1/16 or less.

you can usually find some cheap glassware at your local dollar stores. I've found a couple nonic pint glasses and 22oz mugs there. Otherwise, I usually drink out of my Duval Tulip or DFH snifter

I am definitely a sucker for glassware, but I always try to drink out of a glass. In fact I will sometimes bring a glass to places that don't have appropriate glassware. Here are a few glasses that I use on a regular basis:
    1. Dogfish Head IPA glass- a tulip shaped glass perfect for most ales
    2. A Belgian glass.
    3. A snifter for heavy beers.
    4. Rogue stout glass- great for big dark beers.
    5. Pilsner glass.

Some other specialty glasses might be nice, but these are my go to glasses. I hardly ever use any of my standard shaker glasses, as they do not emphasize anything in the beers you have.

"Absolute must"? :astonished: If by "standard pint glass" you mean the so-called "shaker (or mixing/mixer) pint", which sadly is the standard glass used for beer in many bars, there is no more reviled glass than that within the industry. It is a glass not even originally designed to be used as a drinking vessel, but as half of the standard cocktail shaker (along with a matching, larger stainless piece).

As often noted, it is not large enough to hold a properly poured pint of beer with a sufficient head (since they hold only 16 oz. to the brim), and is also available as a glass of the same dimension with a thicker sham that hold only 14 ounces.

Its prevalence is based on it's economy, "stack-ability" and ruggedness - attributes desired by bar owners, not necessarily beer drinkers.

More at Andy Crouch's article from Beer Advocate Magazine - Breweries and Bars Should Kill the Shaker Pint
or his earliest blog post The Shaker Pint Must Die. Even more anti-Shaker info can be found with a Google search for "Garrett Oliver" + "Shaker Pint" :grinning: , the Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster noted for comments like "I think a shaker pint is probably about the worst glass out there. It's pretty much a jam jar. "

If I'm at home. Glass. ALWAYS.
Sam Adam Perfect Pint glass was a game changer in my book. Highly recommended.
You can own a stein. I have several. You will rarely use them.
    Room temp. ALWAYS.

I find the American pint glass is perfectly fine... pours quickly into your mouth... good for some lighter beers.
The heavier stout and such, i like a short type Guinness glass (though thats not the technical name).

Sorta new to glassware and trust me it makes a difference. Proper glassware is everything. Good beers can go into pints but great beers need to be served in their respective beers.

Never chill the glass- the condensation waters the beer down. Glasses and the right type are important, but if you're just having fun with friends, who cares? If it's a special beer, or you're reviewing, make the effort to get the right glassware.

I generally drink from the recommended glassware for the style. However, I will sometimes drink IPAs from the bottle because it seems to retain slightly more bitterness versus in the pint glass or mug.
