So, the question I have for you fellow BAs is: Do you have bottles that you're wanting to hold onto so badly - say for future trading "power", to continue a vertical, calm the beer down, or whatever the reason may be - but just can't seem to hang on to it because there are so many tempting trades out there asking for that specific beer? My dilemma is, I managed to get my hands on a handful of a highly sought after beer and now I'm down to my last two bottles. I've cracked two bottles myself and had another bottle of it shared by a friend. I just want to know your opinions on the matter....if you've already had it, do you try to go for new exciting things? Or do you hold onto it for whatever reason you may have?

    Cheers and happy drinking!

If I've had it then I move on to different and more exciting things. But I probably don't hold the bottles hostage for the best offer I can get for them.

My main reasons for holding a beer are 1) I need it to calm down; 2) It has a reputation for aging well so I'm curious and 3) I just can't drink it all and I tend towards trying newer stuff.

If a beer I have is worth more trading than it is drinking, I'll trade it - this is the case for almost all the beers I have traded.

    not really, no.

I don't like to hold onto my beer- I get more than a few dozen bottles and I start to get antsy and open things. I *hate* having too many bottles.

I figure in 20 years or so my shelf beers will all be whales.

I try not to put myself in the position of overbuying limited release beers just because I can. I prefer to leave some on the shelf for others. Thus everything I buy generally has an intended home right away (my belly, my cellar, or a trade). I will trade things from the "cellar" category if it proves necessary, but it's rare.

I don't have too many super rare beers that command a lot of trade value mainly because I tend to drink the rarities I trade for soon after trading for them, realize they weren't worth the asking price, and don't trade for them again. I guess I'm saying I don't have this problem.

This is my guess as well.

As for the OP i went through this same problem. I had 2 bottles of KH left of my original 4 and after cracking one with my dad and one with my tasting group I knew I was gonna save 1 bottle for after finals and the other one I didnt know. After drinking the 1 bottle after finals I decided I wanted to give my bottle a new home and got rewarded very generously for giving it up. In the end its up to how much you like the beer.

The stuff I keep is the stuff I enjoy so much that I want to be able to open one whenever the mood strikes me, like Bourbon County or Dark Lord. Everything else gets traded or shared with friends. Also, I've never traded a beer I haven't tried.

I have a bottle of KBS that I'm holding onto for dear life. I only had a 4 pack to begin with. I drank one, traded one, and sent one out in a BIF. I loved, loved, loved the one bottle that I had and I'll be damned if I'm trading it. I've been unemployed for a lot longer than I like to admit and that last bottle of KBS will be cracked once I've landed a job.

It's just KBS, but as pschul said, it's up to how much you like the beer in question and I really fucking like KBS.

    correct! here:

"I had 16 bottles of King Henry at one point..... I think 1 KH (plus some locals?) for 1 BeatB3 is a fair trade"

    here:

"That's why I plan to hold on to a few of my leftover King Henry...In a few years it would work easy. King Henry will hold the value of Rare, if not a higher value, in the near future."

i know it's old hat to say "omg people are hoarding this beer for future trade value," but... people are hoarding this beer for future trade value. this will continue as long as people push the "one-offs are more valuable than gold" and "beer flavor only improves with age" fallacies.

i look forward to the day when king henry is over the hill and 500 cases of it come out of the woodwork.

Haha....caught in the act! Nice detective work. But seriously though, I'm about to trade one of the last two away (I think) and I'll probably drink the other one with my newly established tasting group soon with a handful of other BA Barleywines. I've managed to get some beers that I've been wanting for quite some time with the King Henrys I snatched up and I realize that is better than having a shit ton of the same beer. And I'm not hoarding this beer (although I mentioned holding onto some in another thread)....ask the handful of trade partners that received the majority of my KH allotment (along with one BA getting one from me as a surprise extra!).

well, in your case you probably reached a tipping point where the offers were too good to pass up against the prospect of some news ruining king henry (e.g. a top reviewer slamming the beer as "over the hill"). and not to be dismissive, but you're in nebraska. i imagine people with access to king henry on top of other trade bait (e.g. midwest and new york traders) are sitting on quite a bit more of it, purportedly to drink, but perhaps not.

what's weird is i get some agreement when i talk about beer being best fresh, but some of those same people will later mention sitting on a few bottles of rare or king henry. hmm.
