    hey guys (and gals),

i am thinking about (probably) taking a job in the silicon valley area and was hoping to find out more about the beer scene...where are the good beer bars located? anywhere with good food, beer selection, and a laid back atmosphere? the wife and i arent big into bars that are loud and crowded so restaurant/bars are usually our thing...also, what about breweries...i know about the ones north of the bay (lag, RR) and that FW is in Paso Robles to the south...anything in the valley or San Jose?

so that is where i stopped rambling...any info is greatly appreciated and i look forward to being some of your neighbors soon...

btw - moving from seattle so let me know if there is anything you want me to pick up in the PNW and bring down when we move that you can't get in Cali.

    Thanks!

Where in silicon valley? That moniker covers a pretty substantial area, with pretty disparate price points. You might find a spot you like with the wife first and then figure out beer places after...

If you want beer first, can't beat San Carlos/Redwood City for suburbs. For a more urban experience, SF rules, followed by Oakland and then San Jose. Again, recommendations change depending on where your work is, how much you're willing to commute and how much you're willing to pay (and you will pay a lot...)

Secure the JOB first. Then worry about the beer. You can always live somewhere else and commute like the rest of us. Priorities!

Lots of great bar options popping up in the South Bay. Good Karma, Original Gravity, ISO:Beer , and San Pedro Square Market are all close by in downtown San Jose and consistently have excellent beers on tap. In Santa Cruz, Santa Adairius is my favorite brewery and one of the better up and coming breweries nationwide. As far as breweries on this side of the hill, I've heard good things about Clandestine, but have not been yet. Santa Clara Valley Brewing makes some good beers, but no tap room yet. Plenty more stuff to mention, but hope that helps.

Likely Mountain View or Sunnyvale if I take the job...

Thank you! Looks like downtown San Jose has a few nice spots...I've been told that downtown San Jose is unsafe - thoughts?

The 3-way is awesome and if they are still making fresh batches when i come down i will definitely pick some up for anyone who wants it. Growlers of Boneyard might be a bit tougher but if you really want one I can see what I can do when rolling through Oregon...

That makes me laugh, I don't know why. It's a city -- it has crime, like any other city -- but downtown is no more or less safe than any other place of similar size. I live downtown and spend most of my time there -- I don't personally feel unsafe there. Just keep your head about you.

In addition to what has already been recommended, check out Clandestine Brewing, Strike Brewing, and the Hermitage for local breweries with tap rooms near-ish downtown (actually all are south, but not much -- one to two miles). Santa Clara Brewing is opening their spot in the same "general vicinity" as well, I'm told, later this year. DTSJ has a pretty good beer scene going on. Welcome to Silicon Valley.

There was an excellent npr show about the perceived danger of dtsj. Looking at the numbers, the crime rate is lower than either Oakland or SF, however due to the comparatively thin crowds, some of the more unsavory characters stand out. I have never felt unsafe, but I am used to street people, having lived in Santa Cruz for a long time. As with any city, there is crime, but if you mind your own business, you should be fine.

Anyways, welcome and enjoy the beer scene!

I would still be cautious. I hear the iSCSIs and the IDEs are still in a blood war that has been raging for the better part of a decade. Would hate to get caught in the middle of that.

Congrats! Lots of people live in the city (SF) and commute to their tech jorbs down in the South Bay. I live in the city and commute to the North Bay for work, but that's a much easier route, albeit one without any good public trans options. I park my car on Friday and often don't get in it again until Monday since you can hit all the great beer bars and restaurants in the city without needing to drive. Lots of the East and South Bay are easily accessible on BART and Caltrain. May not be for you, but just throwing it out there as an option.

the BART was probably the best thing ever for public transit.

I wish we had one down here in SD since the trolly and coaster only go so far inland (i.e. pretty much not at all past fashion valley I think).

Except it doesn't go anywhere close to Mountain View or Sunnyvale.

Well then almost the best public transit... by comparison still better than what we have, although SD is making improvements. The trolley station at UCSD (if it ever gets completed) would be a nice start.

So, when people say it is unsafe they are probably referring to homeless people and not gang members? I assume that is what you mean by "street people"? I live by tons of homeless people now so that wouldnt be a change for me...gang members would be a different story...

No clue what either of those are? I think you are making a joke but not sure?
