I didn't see it in here, but how does one pronounce Maudite? I always pronounce it Mow-Dite, which I know is wrong. What is the correct pronunciation?

I've heard maw-dit ("dit" pronounced like "bit") from a Unibroue rep a number of years ago. However, listening to the pronunciation here, the Canadian pronunciation sounds almost like maw-zdzit. The French pronunciation has the "z" sound more pronounced. Looking here, it APPEARS that moe-dzit is the consensus.

Go with what works for you. Unless you plan on travelling to Quebec, I wouldn't try to get it perfect. Just close enough so the bartender pours you the right beer. :grinning:

The closest English approximation would be mow-DEET, with the "mow" part being somewhere between mow and moo.

There is no short "I" (as in sit) sound in French.

"Maudite" is a French word that means cursed. The proper French pronunciation is "moh-deet." Imagine you're saying "mow" the lawn, except try to not pronounce the "w."

While true...the Quebec accent is such that it is closer to "maw-dit" and this is the way the beer is pronounced in most of Quebec and in French speaking Canada. Depending on how the word is being used the emphasis will change from the first syllable to the last syllable.

As a native Alabamian who is on the look out for Belgian beer from local bottle shops also frequently staffed by native Alabamians I am going to have to start writing down the names of my beers and passing notes.

Koovie day Jacob Inn's. I'm thinking it might be near that place that makes the Artoiz stuff. Admittedly, whenever my wife asks me what I'm drinking and I reply with my best attempt at a proper pronunciation, I get that "get over yourself" glare.

While true with proper "Parisian" or "School" French, in reality there is a short "I" in much of Canadian French "vite" (fast, pronounced VEET) is often pronounced "vit" while "dites" (to say) properly pronounced Deet (silent s) is pronounced "dits"

Again due to accents this word is usually pronounced MO-dit (emphasis on the first syllable) or maw-DIT with the emphasis on the second...it depends on the usage and placement in a sentence and the intended perception.

Until last week I thought it was pronounced Ji A-Lie But my friend just got back with some from FL (which I get to try tonight for the first time (canned 8/2) plus one of their pale ales, Amped to say the least.) And he informed they pronounced it as Hi lie. Not sure which is correct I'm just stoked to try it.

Yeah, I'm always embarrassed to order it in a bar, because if I actually say "I'll have a koo-veh deh jah-koh-beh rooj" the bartender will likely say "what?"

~10 years ago I had a lay-over in Portland, OR and I went to the airport bar. I ordered a beer from "Deh-choot-ess Brewery". The server laughed, and told me how to pronounce "Deschutes".
