Geary's gets great results from Ringwood.

For my money, Red Star Quick Rising makes some pretty nasty beer. Fleischman's is marginally better.

German hefeweizen yeast - I dislike bananas and anything with similar flavors.

Safale dry yeast strains aren't the best strains in the world either.

I think that saying a particular strain of ale or lager yeast is "bad" across the board overlooks the fact that any given yeast strain is going to interact with other brewing variables (e.g., temperature, hops) to yield different flavors ... One strain is probably going to produce different effects due to such interactions, which makes it problematic to say that a given strain sucks across the board. Less fine-grained distinctions (like talking about hefe yeasts or brett) make more sense in this context, as these types of flavors are polarizing and yield distinctive effects that show up regardless of other brewing variables.

I think I had a beer with that last night. That sounds like what I was thinking about it. Butterscotch mess.

Rogue "Pacman" yeast, but mainly because it has Rogue's name on it. Also, largely medicocre beers. Second would be the yeast Rogue pulled from a brewer's facepubes. Again, mainly due to it being Rogue.

California ale - the bud light of ale yeasts, no flavour whatsoever. At least the proper Ringwood yeasts have character.

Kolsch yeast. I really like it in theory but whenever I brew with it I never get the results I think I should.

I believe Arcadia utilizes Ringwood as well - to much better effect in my opinion.

no idea I drink beer, the yeast if it ruins the beer, well then me and the beer and whatever that yeast is. Not sure a yeast can ruin a beer if done right, but hey I am still learning.

just started reading the yeast book.

what do I mean is does the yeast itself does not ruin the beer for you?
not sure it does or can, but hey, live and learn. Still other than ipa's/DIPA I not had that bad a beer made in a micro type place yet that was that bad. meaning if the beer is done right I not had a yeast ruin it.....of course I not had every beer there is either.

Now I have been very disappointed when brewers cannot figure out how to use different or correct yeast for the beer type.....nothing worse than a flight of 5 or 6 beers than taste nearly exactly the same with your eyes closed.....

    cheers!

well an "infection" yeast (or bacteria) is kind of like the definition of a weed. A weed is just a plant you don't want growing in the place it is, but itself could be a fine plant on it's own.

The same wild yeast, brett, or lacto that ruins something like a barrel-aged imperial stout might produce a great lambic.

Before this thread spills over into numerous pages, can yall just name a beer that has the yeast you're hating on?

I'd love to try these myself...whether or not I end up agreeing is irrelevant, I just want to learn how to blame/credit the yeast's contribution to a beer's flavor.

Texan actually. lol yea, its one of those deals where you mind knows, but you cannot clearly type it out.
    I just live In Florida.

I home brew, and I am still learning after 40 years.
Not met a yeast I did not like yet. Its the beers that I dislike, meaning I do not think the yeast is the main reason a beer tastes bad. IT can be, but I Have NOT ran into it.

Now the way they smoke the malt, yep, adding fruit, yep. adding so many hops all you taste is pine, yep, but never the poor old yeast bugs just doing their jobs...
