Name sounds fine. Just remember to point out (like Stone did) that it is not a fundraiser, but "an exclusive pre-sampling event."

Matt, don’t forget to use Oettinger Kellerbier as your ‘baseline’ when you taste test US craft brewed Kellerbier!

    Cheers!

heh, I've opened a can of worms maybe. My baseline for Kellerbier will always be that Wippra Kellerbier. Fantastisch!!

And Miller Lite, a "fine Pilsner beer," as the baseline American example when comparing Pilsners. Sounds fair....

Olde Mecklenburg had their soft/VIP opening on Saturday, which I was lucky enough to get invited to. I have to say, they are changing the game around here for what it means to visit a brewery "taproom." The inside is like Uerige, and the outside reminiscent of a Munich Biergarten. Check out the 60 BBL Braukon system in the shade of the pecan tree. Prost!

Urban Chestnut, in St. Louis, has something similar. One location has big biergarten next to it with those same benches as shown in your picture while the other, newer location has a huge bierhall.

I couldn't find a photo of the bierhall.

I tried Troegs Sunshine Pils last night. It was OK. I didn't love it. In a way, it reminded me a bit of Jever, which also has its fans but which I also don't love. Die Frau had a sip and enjoyed it, and I usually defer to her on matters of taste. I'd rather have a Rohaus in front of me to be honest. Up next, Victory.

Author's Note: It could be simply that I don't have #properglassware here yet. It is en route, hopefully intact, from Germany. When I was out at dinner the other day, there was a promotion where if you ordered a New Belgium beer you'd get to keep the glass. Needing glassware, die Frau and I each took one glass home. It doesn't appear to be #proper for anything, so I'm just going with the assumption that New Belgium had some soda glasses made up. Here is a poor photo.

Troegs Sunshine Pils reminds me of a mix between Jever and Wernesgruener. I like both of those, so I like the Troegs, too. Still, I'd probably go with fresh Wernesgruener from ALDI at $5.99 a six pack over a $10.99 Sunshine Pils 6-er.

I didn't remember exactly what I had said about the Troegs Sunshine Pils when I tried it 2 summers ago, so I had to go back and find it, and lo and behold...

#24 - Tröegs Brothers' Sunshine Pils (can): virtually no aroma, maybe some Pils malt smell. Flavor is closest to a good Pils in Germany of all the one's I've tried. Pils malts are well present in flavor, giving it some sweet, Pils malt but not overpowering. Slightly dry… not digging that… yet very good flavor, close to a Jever, but lacking the aroma that should correspond with the taste.

Interesting how all three of us mentioned it tasted similar too a Jever Pils. Did yours also lack aroma like mine did?

My answer is to double-down: a 12-pack of Troegs Sunshine Pils for $18.99. Woo-Hoo!

    Cheers!

P.S. I bought my first Oktoberfest beer of the season: freshly made Sly Fox Oktoberfest. The 6-pack cans cost $8.99. Double Woo-Hoo!:grinning:

I thought so, too. Die Frau said that it smelled nice, so I guess we were split on this one.

I get aroma from Sunshine Pils; below is from my July 9, 2013 ‘report’:

    Aroma
Sunshine Pils: Aroma is dominated by very noticeable pilsner malt aroma; there is some Noble hop aroma there as well.

Tannenzäpfle: Aroma is basically a ‘twin’ of the Sunshine Pils. I mostly perceive the pilsner malt aroma but there is some Noble hop aroma in the background.

Below is what I mentioned wrt Jever:

    Mouthfeel

Sunshine Pils: A nice ‘chewiness’ from the pilsner malt but finishes dry. Not as dry as a Jever but pleasingly dry nonetheless.
Compared to the Tannenzäpfle it has a softer mouthfeel.

Tannenzäpfle: A nice mouthfeel from the pilsner malt and on the dry side. The mouthfeel is more prickly than the Sunshine Pils but I do not think that is a liability; I like the mouthfeel. Maybe the Tannenzäpfle is a bit more highly carbonated?

    Cheers!

I have that problem with a lot of lagers. One thing that I've noticed is that at the end of a serving you can almost get a better aroma sensation from the empty glass. At least you can take in the malt characters more.

It smelled OK to me. I was actually pleased with the understated nature of the aroma hops; but when I pointed this out, I was assured that the truly fresh stuff provides a hop blast to the nose. Really I find the Sunshine Pils to be a good, local(ish) equivalent to a good macro German pils. The very best German pils are, for me, still in an entirely different class altogether. But I'll definitely take what I can get, so....

Victory's Prima Pils now. Americanized to be sure. I'd say it's crossed into the "IPL" zone rather than straight up pils. Nevertheless it's a pleasant beer and I'd probably prefer this to Sunshine Pils, which actually did remind me of a German Pils.

Having Yuengling's Summer Wheat. It's OK, maybe something like Erdinger territory. Smelled good, tasted OK. I wouldn't put it up against some of my wheat beer faves, but not a bad option for $0.99 for a bottle (discounted). One problem I had was with the head. I had a Weihenstephaner Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel a night or two ago, and even a gentle pour had to be waited out for the head to settle. Yuengling's didn't really have that. It poured a small collar that dissipated quickly, even with a moderately strong pour. Not what I'd expect from a wheat beer. Not really sure what to give this one. I think I'll round it up to a 3.0/5.0.
