Quite honestly the pursuit of this beer makes me feel like an asshole. You have to bother people like @aasher and his industry peers. Most places don't put it out on the shelves so you have to ask/bother clerks and the like just to try to acquire some. Plenty of people ask and then leave which makes the rest of us look bad when we ask for it but it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't proposition. If you want to acquire some you have to ask otherwise you aren't going to get any. SMH. Honestly it takes some of the joy out of this great beer.

Very true. Same goes with any special release too.

When Floyds has it at the to go counter, does it last overnight usually or no?

I personally hate this chase. the beer rarely hits shelves here, but then stores get annoyed when you call to ask about it, even if you have a relationship with them. It's very much damned if you do damned if you don't. They don't like you calling, but if you don't call, you don't know if it's available, then you come to the store and ask, and bam...it's all gone "we sold it all in an hour". it sucks. I hear you.

I still don't understand why they hold back so much to sell at the brewery. Why not release it into distribution. That way stores wouldn't be seeing only 1 or 2 cases at a shot and having it be gone in 5 minutes. I understand it's a draw to get people to the brewery, but they're getting paid either way! Shit, Lakefront brewery tour guides... and even the Klischs themselves have said go to a local retailer around the city instead of buying the beer at the brewery. You'll probably get a better price and your money will go to other businesses as well. The only time I've seen beer cheaper there is when they were trying to sell old stock.

And this is coming from someone who lives in Milwaukee and would probably never see it in bottles anyway.

I'm working on trying to get something going with one of my fraternity brothers that lives in the region just to pick me up a case of ZD and GBH every month or 2 at the brewery. Not only that but they are about $8 cheaper per case and you can get more than just a lone sixer.

The only one I ever had was given to me my a buddy that works at the New Glarus Brewery - some of the Three Floyds brewers were there for a visit and they brought a case to share. He gave me his because he doesn't like hoppy beers...that was about a year ago:slight_frown:. I did have a sample at the Great Taste and it's a damn fine beer, but I'm not going to chase it to the ends of the Earth

So you save 8 bucks and get 18 more ZD's, but how are you going to compensate your frat bro for dropping everything on a release day, driving to FFF, waiting in line for 45 minutes or more and then getting the beer to you?

No. Lately it's been lasting 2-3 hours and it's off the list before the night is over.

A side from that being the way they have always done it, they would need to absolutely flood the market to keep the price point where it should be. ZD regularly retails for $15 a 6-pack and that's if you can find someone that's not selling them individually. Selling almost exclusively at the brewery, while an excellent draw, also helps them keep the price of their beer down. I'd imagine if they could eliminate the shit storm that occurs every time they release the stuff they would. It's not like they have a hard time getting bodies in the door, ZD or not. In my opinion this also pertains to the two case limit and the price bump. I'd don't believe that it was put in place to create scarcity, but rather to prevent retailers from swooping in and buying 5-10 cases at $35 per and then selling $15 6-packs all day long. No lie, before the case limit it wasn't uncommon to see pallets of ZD being wheeled out to people's cars.

LOL Just cause YOU get ripped off by stores near you, doesn't mean everyone does. It retails for $9.99, many places will charge $10.99 though.

And if they started distributing more of it....you all would be crying even more. "BUT WHHY does BINNYS always get soo much more ZD than everyone else?"" ""My store NEVER gets ZD anymore, but Illinois does, waaaaahhhhhhh!!!""

Its at the source. The people who make it can hook you up. Its really not hard to get, AT ALL, if you want it.

I had a much harder time finding a 4-pack of regular BCBS in December last year than I've had getting ZD all this year. Its come to our local Hyvee probably half a dozen times since the beginning of the year.

I was shooting the brewery for a magazine a few days ago and bottles weren't for sale at the time but there were a good number of pallets in the back and in the cooler. Made me sad that it was so close but couldn't take any with me.

FTR, I do not support price gouging. It's even led to me not patronizing my local corner store, which is unfortunate. I'm about 45 minutes from the brewery so I'm there at least once a month. I have no trouble keeping ZD in my fridge, but to be completely honest, there's another rock and roll brewery in the Chicagoland area that has been getting my hop-dollar recently, so they could stop making ZD altogether and I'd lose little to no sleep. Given the amazing things that are happening with all the new hop varietals, ZD is actually, as my buddy puts it, pretty one dimensional. Just wait until they start bottling YUM YUM (hopefully). That's a beer that's flying way under the radar, IMHO.

Picked up a case at the brewery yesterday and as I got there I saw 6 fat Asian women all over the age of 50 loading up a crappy van full of 12 cases of zombie dust. Made me laugh. No wonder its only lasting a few hours at the brewpub.

Yeah it seems store/restaurant owners/sole proprietors and their families all really enjoy drinking ZD and go through it like water too apparently. 'Tis a shame they never stay to have it on draft while they are there. Guess they are in a rush to get home and drink it.
