After 2 batches of Saisons (D'hommel and Fievre de Apricot), La cumbre is prepping for a bottle release of a great DIPA, Full Nelson. Only a week away, according to their blog they will entering this into the Great American Brew Festival - so it's safe to say that I and all locals have extremely high hops, I means hopes! Last years Father Nelson was a massive hit, sounds like the Full Nelson will be as well.

I wonder if they'll run into any licensing or trademark problems because of this?

at least you went through the effort to put photos up! I say if La Cumbre wins the award, the guys from Blue Mountain go and accept it!
Yeah, quite confusing with the name.

How is the Blue Mountain Full Nelson? I've only had a couple of their beers and they were mediocre

It's not bad. Above average hoppiness for a pale ale. The Nelson part comes from the county they reside in. Their Barrel House stuff is hit and miss. The misses are near misses and the hits are really good.

Agreed. For a solid (not great) BB Stout, you can't go wrong with Dark Hollow...especially at only $10.

Man, this is the second time in a month that an Albuquerque brewery has released a beer under an already claimed name (the other being Marble Brewery with Tesla). It should be interesting to see how this plays out. I'll go ahead and predict that La Cumbre's will be the more popular of the two, which should get the VA brewery's attention and cause some problems.

I just hope LC and Blue Mountain can go the Avery-Russian River route and make a Collaboration not Litigation Ale.

you know what La Cumbre should do instead....a little research on beer names. It isn't that difficult.

So this is not the same thing as Father Nelson? Is it still a Nelson Sauvin beer?

Part of me agrees, but I'm not in the business, nor hip to what brought about the name change, so I'll wait until Jeff chimes in.

here is the beer description. I don't think ingredient's matter in a name argument.....Though as far as I know, there isn't a dispute between names....and that wouldn't be my business....was just pointing out an identical beer name. http://www.bluemountainbrewery.com/our-beer/

It is a different beer. I asked the same question at the brewery this week. It's lower ABV and has, if I remember correctly, a different mix of hops (I think Father had Sorachi Ace and this will not).

Also, this beer to my knowledge preceded Father Nelson, which I don't think had been brewed before this year. Full Nelson has been on tap at the brewery in past years, as has another beer called Half Nelson.

First let me make it clear that we mean to step on no toes with the naming of any of our beers. We have made this beer several times over 2 years in the state of NM, giving us first use rights in this market. At this time, we know of no breweries with federal trademark protection of the name, and furthermore, we know of at least 13 other uses of the name around the country, showing that if there is a brewery that has a mark, they are not actively defending that mark. With over 3,000 breweries in the country, and an average of over 60 named beers per brewery, there are going to be overlaps in names. We as a company only hope that when toes are stepped on, that breweries can act like grownups and open up a dialogue first. This is part of a series of Nelson Sauvin inspired beers that we have brewed many times. We like the name a lot and obviously so do other breweries.

Just as an FYI, the Blue Mountain Trademark appears to have been filed in 2007 and granted in 2008.

Hopefully there is an amicable solution.
