I have one bottle of BCBVS that has been properly cellared almost entirely since release, almost 4 years now. I have yet to try this coveted variant.

Should I wait until the Vanilla Rye comes out in about 3 months or should I drink it sooner? Anyone had any recent experiences with this beer? Thanks.

Had the opportunity to have a taste of the 2010 Vanilla at a tasting a few weeks back. It was damn good, the vanilla was still very present and the whole thing was quite smooth. Honestly, I'd wonder how much longer the vanilla can hang on though. It's drinking really well right about now, I'd think about popping it open relatively soon.

By the way, I'm super jealous, I was wishing I had a lot more than my little taste.

I had my first and only BCBVS back in December. It was quite impressive, but based on the reviews I read from when it was fresh, it seemed like the vanilla flavor may had faded a bit in my bottle. The vanilla aroma was still amazing though.

Best served fresh. 3 months ain't gonna make a difference now.

I would probably wait and do them side by side, but the bottle you have should have been consumed long ago in my opinion.

Agree that it should have been consumed long ago. I'd not wait to do side by side since it would then not be fair to either beer - it will highlight the lack of vanilla and faded flavors in the older one which then likewise may give the newer one an unjustified "better" rating. These are now two very different beers in my opinion.

I would have gladly consumed it long ago if I hadn't only acquired it within the last year...

I've never been disappointed in a bottle of Vanilla except, quite oddly, the ones I sampled last week at the Goose Island Migration event. But, although generally I would go with the school of "if you've never tried it, drink it now", in this case I think you'd just as well save it a couple more months to try with the new release. For science.

This would have been a better question four years ago

I had this fresh and with 2 years on it and it was amazing both times. It still had plenty of vanilla with 2 years on it. I don't see how this beer gets any better at this point so I would drink it. Vanilla is being made again…..
