That is so sad that people are only limited to 3 breweries in CA and VT. I wouldn't chose either of those states based on that fact alone.

I didn't know infants could drink in VT. Must be tough trying to belly up to a bar with all those infants trying to attach themselves to the HF teats.

Does alchemist have any barrel aged beers? Cali produces some of the best barrel aged beers in the country, another point for Cali!

But the problem is you have NM grouped with two relatively shitty beer states.

I live in a state that often gets mentioned in these kind of threads, but you know, California--there's a couple COUNTIES in California which could provide a pretty respectable 3 breweries, specifically Sonoma: Russian River, Lagunitas, and Bear Republic.

Though San Diego County advocates could come up with a pretty persuasive 3 I guess, too.

Not really a problem. It's a theoretical scenario. I picked 3 random states. 2 of the 3 options are positive if you do enjoy New Mexico beer. This is not hard.

    To the people of Vermont:

Do you actually enjoy having all the publicity of people thinking you have the best beer state? It seems like people making pilgrimages would be annoying, especially if that means you cant get beer easily that is brewed in your own state.

Hmmm, I can't even call which top 3 is better...wouldn't be fair without trying PtY. Let's assume that RR ties HF, which I can see. In terms of IPAs, I'd pick Alchemist over the offerings from Firestone Walker, Lagunitas, Stone, and other CA brewers. Although this may be heresy, I think SUCKS tops Double Sunshine. Also, VT has nothing to compare to Parabola or Scuaba, and CA has a lot of other breweries like Lost Abbey doing exciting crazy things. I'll give CA the edge overall, and leave the PtY vs. Heady and RR vs. HF debates for another day when I can objectively judge the beers side by side.

But the small drawback would have to be living in NJ.

Close one. BC has Central City, but QC has Dieu Du Ciel. Gotta give the edge to QC, though.

To make this a little more fair, you should be comparing all of New England vs California

    New England all the way....
