Haven't had any Lawson so I can't speak of that brewery, looks like the produce some amazing brews though.

There is only one correct answer here ... California.

Colo vs. Oregon? I'm going to vote for Oregon. Portland breweries+ Deschutes and Boneyard

    how about Oregon vs. Michigan?

Clearly the concept of pound for pound like a boxing forum would use could help here.

Living in SoCal, with Alpine, RR, Modern Times, and others relatively easy to obtain, I still trade like crazy for VT beers. It's not just a rarity/hype thing, either; HF, Lawson's, Fiddlehead, and Alchemist all have some indefinable quality--refinement, maybe?--that sets them apart. (Although Alpine comes close.)

I've yet to sample many brews from Vermont. San Diego alone is home to more reputable breweries than most states. So between the two I'd say California wins. I'd gladly take Michigan over either though

There are 50 great states and lots of amazing breweries in all of them

I appreciate the info., but I wasn't talking about the number of breweries by state. I was talking about the diversity of "popular" beers distributed in each state, respectively.

True, but things aren't so rosy in California either, or so I hear.

This is a great idea, but the someone should make a top 10 (?) state bracket with a 10-7 and 9-8 play in round and use the voting tool. Whoever put Vermont and Cali in a first round match up should reconsider. I think both are in the top 5. Cali for sheer volume and greatness, Vt for high quality smaller breweries (that should have points off for not shipping out of state).

I've never had Alpine beers, but whatever I've concocted in my head based on reviews and talk about them was immediately brought to mind when I first encountered Lawson's beers. Refinement seems to be a very good word to use. I look forward to trying them some day when the time is right.

By my count of Brewer's Association members, there are 66 "true" micro breweries in NC and 45 in VA.

"True" micro breweries in this definition exclude (1) "satellite" breweries, and (2) "regional" breweries like Abita, Dogfish, Sweetwater, etc.

Also not sure how comprehensive the Brewer's Association membership list is.

People coming here to get good beer is OK. besides, you can't really get Alchemist nor Lawson's in a store, without hockey pads and a helmet. Thus, I drink a lot of Stone, Victory, Unibroue and Ommegang. So the point of this thread escapes me.

California ... On volume if anything else.
Vermont if you are thinking best beers per acre.

    Two great beer states.

In Michigan, all we care about is Michigan vs Ohio.

    A battle we always dominate.
