i find it funny when people get Pizza Port and Port mixed up, and then people (usually from San Diego) get all defensive. not that that's the case in this thread, but it happens. Pizza Port and Port will be confused till the end of time. Port really should have picked a different name

This then leads us back to the logo change thread. Which as we all remember, was..."fun."

Central Coast Brewing out of SLO. Lucky Day IPA, Catch 23 Black rye, and Terrace Hill DIPA are all pretty good.

Defensive, not really. I think all people from around here are saying is that it isn't that difficult to keep straight if you live around here. Somebody from Chicago? Sure. From OC? Nah.

i just remember seeing instances of SD people getting bent out of shape

it's a pretty easy thing to get confused really. again, probably wasn't the best name to go with. maybe i'll start a brewery in Torrance called Smog

It's a case of hindsight being 20/20 - when Port opened in 2006, it made a lot of sense to brand as such. It created familiarity with the link to Tomme's past at Pizza Port and the Marsaglias' shared ownership, allowed them to move some of the more popular recipes into production, and there was no plan at that time for Pizza Port to get into the packaging business. A plan to create some quick familiarity but eventually build out a separate brand - Port for packaging and Pizza Port for brewpub - makes sense in the context of the time.

Now that both breweries have packaged products in distribution, it creates a bit of confusion for people who aren't aware of how the companies relate, but it's kinda late in the game to change either brand. I suppose that all of the Port beers could just be merged into Lost Abbey, but 1) they've maintained both brands with separate concepts and aesthetics for years now and 2) it would probably mean price increases for all of the Port beers. Perhaps at some point it would make sense to merge Port Brewing back into Pizza Port, but I haven't the slightest idea how that deal would look financially.

The IPA is FABULOUS! I think I would put it up against any other IPA in the 6-7% range...when it's fresh! It flies off the shelf so fast at my local TJ's, it is hard to get one that isn't fresh. $5.99 4-pack here, by the way.

that's a well worded argument. the fact is, it's still a point of confusion that comes up ALL the time. i'm sure it's frustrating for both places. or, maybe they don't get tired of explaining it.

You know what's even more confusing? Neither Pizza Port's canning facility or Port's bottling facility are anywhere near a port.

I picked up some Hess IPAs in 16 oz. cans this weekend when I was down in SD, which I was excited to try since we don't get them up here in OC. Unfortunately, they were underwhelming (the Rye IPA was ok - the other nearly a drain pour).

I'm curious which one you drain poured. The Solis? Please don't tell me you got the Jucundus.

    They're all over OC.

I forget the name, but I think it might have been Solis (according to the writing on the can, it's one that changes recipe from batch to batch). Edit: I didn't end up drain pouring it though (split a can with my wife, and she did).

Huh, I've never seen them (although I've never looked). I usually only buy cans/bottles at WF in Laguna and Newport and hadn't seen them at either place. Don't think I'll be looking for them again, though.

What bothers me the most about those Ol' Burro cans is that I've purchased several (5+) that have had canning issues. I complained to the store and brewery and never heard back. Now I have to break apart the box (it comes in a cardboard box) and examine each can. Also, as great as they are fresh, they fall off quick and morph into a shelf turd after 30 days.

Burro is good when very fresh, but it falls off HARD.
