Planning a trip to Bamberg in a few days. I have wanted to try the Augstiner Oktoberfest for a while, but it's not that easy to find outside Bavaria and I'd like to have it as fresh as possible. Will finding it in Bamberg be straightforward?
    Cheers

@herrburgess could probably be more definitive, but with all of the breweries resident in Bamberg I'd have to say there isn't much call to "import" Augustiner.

There is a new "craft" shop in Bamberg, and they may have it. Doubt seriously that you'll find it in any of the regular Getraenkemaerkte.

If you strike out in the brick-and-mortar shops, Biershop Bayern has it available for delivery, if that's a possibility for you.

    Good luck!

Not to put words in the OP's mouth, but to me "as fresh as possible" would not send me to bottles at the Getraenkemaerkte. However, when in Bamberg -- and wanting to enjoy good Märzen -- I'm headed to Schlenkerla!

My $0.02 - I don't think there'll be any freshness issues with a seasonal beer in a Getränkemarkt. To your second point - OP never said he wasn't going to Schlenkerla.

Yeah, but bottle over draft? When there's so much good beer at arm's length?
I didn't allude to that either, but I will allude that if he tries the Schlenkerla when he gets there, he'll forget all about the Augustiner!

(and no, that's not a dig on Augustiner -- just saying, when in Rome, you know?)

I've only ever been to the standard spots in Bamberg, but that said I can't think of a spot that has Augustiner on draft. And it doesn't sound like he's going to make it down to Munich, so why not look for a bottle while he's kinda-sorta in the general vicinity.

I know where you're coming from and appreciate it, but heck why not knock off the Augustiner if he can? For example, if it's the only Oktoberfest he hasn't tried yet and he's going to be in Germany, why not look for it?

Author's Note: I may be a little sensitive to this issue as I caught some flak in this very forum a while back for trying to find a Getränkemarkt that carried Spaten's Oktoberfest when I was up in Berlin...

Do they have a website or FB page? If you, you should post it! I've communicated with some places via Facebook and have always received a reply. It can be a helpful tool in planning. This way @jonb5 can send them a message and find out for sure about the Augustiner.

And is it just me, or is jonb5's avatar holding an Augustiner Oktoberfest?

Eh. It's an Irish style imperial pint glass; probably a Carlsberg -- or one of the new Guinness Blonde Lagers. :grinning:

For some reason, I have distant memories of that glass being used almost everywhere in Germany many years ago (70s-'80s). The German version of the US pint glass - almost like a large Willibecher. Not 100% sure though...we need a Reservatol beer...

The one in jonb5's avatar, or in MJ's post? The glass in MJ's post is very Becher-like, but it seems to have an odd girth to the widest spot -- at least compared with those in my collection.

But jonb's huggy glass definitely looks like my Guinness imperial pints... except for that odd pale liquid contained within. :grinning:

Yeah, way off the topic -- but what else is new, right? :grinning:

For the record, mine is a 400 ml Willibecher, which is probably why @steveh noticed a difference. I went to a restaurant supply store looking for 500 ml Bechers but they only had the 400 ml size, so that's what I bought.

Edit: PS - apologies to jonb for derailing the thread. I'll be good now.

Have you tried contacting Cafe Abseits? They carry Aug Edelstoff and Helles... Maybe the owner, Gerhard, could get some... He's here on BA but I don't recall his name (it has a mis-spelling in it). He is on Facebook, though, here: "Belgische Biere im cafe Abseits".

    Prosit!!

OP here, I've been to Bamberg and the Schlenkerla many times, no doubt I'll find myself there over the weekend.

@mjtierney, nice comparison, never occured to me.

The new craft store looks like my best bet for finding the Augustiner Oktoberfest but I won't be chasing it like some crazed whale hunter.

Will post a few pics if I get some worth putting up.

    Prost ihr Säcke

Biershop-Bayern appears to ship to the UK for about €17,00 per packet if I'm reading that correctly. This is what I used to buy the same beer. If all else fails...

The new place in Bamberg is called the Bierothek. Here's a pic a buddy of mine just sent me:

And here's a link to a panorama pic. If I'm not mistaken, that's some Augustiner Edelstoff in the cooler. Hmmm....

Hmmm.... just down the street from Fässla and Spezial, and almost across the street from where I'll be staying... Hmmm indeed!

    Prosit!
