I stopped trading since it was taking a toll on my finances. I would like to give myself a pat on the back.

I don't think the problem is poor people, it's people making poor decisions. I'm definitely one of the less wealthy BAs, which, for that reason, I don't trade a lot. Right now is actually a really trying time because I'm sort of supporting my unemployed brother, so as you can note in my profile, trades are shut down for me right now. Unless 1. I have the money, and 2. I really really want a certain beer, I'm just not going to trade. I'm blessed enough to live in California and I'm totally okay with what I can obtain locally for now.

I've traded "rare live coral" or sold fragments of growout corals I had just for that reason. A hobby that was much like this one, addicting, and expensive.

Usually the trades went down the same way as they do here. Newbs ship first etc.

Unfortunately that is what I did. When I took out a student loan I set aside a certain amount for food expenses since I was living in an apartment. I decided my hobby was more important so I barely ate one meal a day and blew the rest on beer. Pretty stupid financially, granted it sort of canceled out the beer gut. I worked during college so luckily I graduated with little debt.

I was able to complete about 15 trades over the course of two years. I stopped trading a little while ago though.

so is there any chance you know balloo6969? God I really, honestly did not think there was ANY overlap between the beer and coral trading communities. Looks like we all owe balloo a big apology.....

Actually, yes. You are only the second person on the history of this site to ever mention corals in a non-joking reference, which makes it all the more funny.

A year or two ago a user came on here and badly wanted to trade corals for beer. (Only beer-for-beer trades are allowed) He didn't want to understand the rules, or what everyone was trying to explain to him, and the thread got very long and hilarity ensued.

Ever since then, 'corals' has been a running joke around here.

The lousy trading infrastructure on this website promotes these problems.

Nope not joking at all. Awesome hobby really, but far too expensive, and way too much maintenance. At one point I was spending over 2 hours a day just on upkeep, spot feeding corals, trimming and cleaning algae, mixing saltwater, water changes, balancing chemistry etc. You think shipping beer is sketchy, try shipping live coral. You must overnight the packages (shipping upwards of $60 for around 10lbs), try to keep the water temp stable between 65-80 degrees throughout the whole shipping process, triple bagging corals and securing them in a way they won't get knocked around, and just hoping that your shipment would not arrive DOA.....and I just realized I've gone into way too much detail for this site, nobody cares

I did find baloo6969 on reefcentral. He seems to be a lurker on that site, member since 08' but never posted anything until Jan 2012....Not someone I would have traded corals with, let alone beer for corals LOLOLOL
