Hey guys, looking for some advice. I
I have a mini fridge with a freezer on top. I got it for free, so I really want to utilize it without getting a new one. I am new to cellaring, and would like to start with this mini fridge. However, the "freezer" part, is only separated by a removable shelf that is about 3/4 on an inch thick (kind of like an insulation barrier). I put the fridge on the lowest setting, and am still getting a reading of about 43-45 degrees consistently. Any ideas on what to do? AKA keep that cold from getting into the bottom. Any jerry-rigging ideas to keep that cold IN the freezer, while still utilizing the cold would be a great help.

Perhaps try stuffing the freezer portion with styrofoam insulation?

Or stick a bag of peas or other frozen veg in there. Give the freezer something to work on, instead of just being a cold empty space.

I'm surprised it's able to even stay that warm. I was "cellering" in a freezerless mini fridge for a while and on the warmest setting was around about what yours is at. I ended up getting an external temp controller and it works great.

That's odd. I was considering trying to find a cheap freezerless fridge on craigslist, in order to avoid having to get an external temp control

The couple freezerless fridges I've dealt with would only do low 40's or so on the warmest setting. Not sure if there's any out there or not that can go up to the 50's or so with out modifying the thermostat or a temp controler.
