My comment, is based on the fact that I have been to the Highland brewery many times in the past (admittedly, not in the last 3 years, so things may have changed), but whenever we went, we could choose between taps of Gaelic Ale, Kashmir, Oatmeal Porter, Cold Mountain (my go=to winter session beer), and St. Terese's. It just wasn't exciting. Wicked Weed typically has between 15-25 great beers on tap that are all Highland quality or better, in terms of uniqueness, and the food is always great. If I were going to make another planned beer trip to Asheville, I would order my preference as follows:

    Wicked Weed
    Pisgah
    Green Man
    Oskar Blues
    Sierra Nevada
    Wedge
    Burial
    Twin Leaf
    Lexington Ave. (Great food here)
    Asheville Pizza & Brewing
    French Broad
    Highland

Im heading to Asheville in a couple weeks also. Gonna be there during the week and weekend, so will probably hit up the breweries during the week to avoid crowds at WW. Anyways, Ive heard rumors that there are essential like double digit breweries all within walking distance downtown. If thats the case Im planning on doing a pretty heady bar crawl one night. Is that accurate, and if so, any hotel recommendations that will put us in the heart of the action? Looks like the Aloft is right by Wicked Weed, but at $400 a night that doesn't even make sense.

On a related note, why are hotels in Asheville so goddamn expensive?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Aloft is the best location for sure. It is pricey, but not $400 a night. I've stayed there several times and never paid more than $180 or so. Not saying you haven't looked into it, just not sure why it would be that much.

Brewery-wise, Wicked Weed, Burial, Green Man, Twin Leaf, ABC, Altamont, and LAB are all within walking distance of downtown. Wedge, Hi-Wire, and French Broad are each about a 5-10 minute drive from downtown. Pisgah, Oskar Blues, Highland, and Now Sierra Nevada are all a little further out, maybe 15-25 minutes depending on the one.

May have missed one or two.

$409 a night on Priceline the days I am looking at, which are Sept 25th-28th. Makes no sense to me either.

Possibly something going on in the city that weekend (besides my friends wedding, haha)?

That's nuts. But yeah maybe something specific is going on. I know everywhere in Asheville is more expensive in the fall, but didn't think it would be that much more. Maybe check this place out and see if they still have any availability, it's where my groomsmen and I stayed when I got married there this past May...

They are condos above an old theatre right downtown. They were really nice and it was awesome. Right around the corner from Thirsty Monk.

    I'd also recommend checking airbnb.

I -think- you're thinking of One World instead of Altamont. Altamont is nice enough and I just visited this weekend, but it certainly is NOWHERE near walking distance from the others. One World and Thirsty Monk (since Thirsty Monk occasionally brews) are easily walkable.

Not sure what I was thinking, but either way yeah you're right.

Couple of things going on that weekend (Quilt Show, Greek Festival, etc), but the biggest is probably the Asheville Marathon.

Not trying to be a dick, but you probably shouldn't have waited until less than a month before your buddy's wedding to book a room if you were looking for a bargain in Asheville, especially in the fall.

Its that goddamn quilt show, I knew it must be something! haha

Seriously though, must be the marathon, people are crazy about those things.

I fixed up the quote a little bit. Hi Wire is on my South Slope crawl list (that is, easy walkable distance) and One World. Also added a note about Brevard Brewing and Oskar Blues proximity as well as Catawba Brewing's tasting room.

    Nice, yall keep me straight!

Where is Hi-Wire again? I thought it was in West Asheville?

On Hilliard, around the corner from ABC.

I have stayed 4-5 times at the Downtown Inn in the past few years and there is nothing wrong with it. Its no luxury hotel for sure but is clean and comfortable. The location can't be beat (with the exception of Aloft). I wouldn't take my wife there for an anniversary/birthday trip but if we are going downtown to drink for a night, it is the perfect inexpensive spot to crash.

    Exactly.
Some people look to budget so they can spend more on the beer and less on where they close their eyes.

Fair enough. I've only stayed there once for a concert, but I thought it was pretty rough.

The condos I posted a link to are less than $200/night after everything is included, and you get your own apartment with private balcony overlooking the city (all the 1-bedroom units anyway).

Just saying, if yall want to pick out the one detail that I was incorrect about in this thread and make fun of me, that's cool. But don't act like I haven't given any useful info either.

CavemanRamblin, Hi Wire can be walked to from Wicked Weed by heading S out of the Weed past Orange Peel, turn right and it is on that street about 4-5 blocks up on the right. Usually, my last stop, starting from the weed, giving walking tours. Usually head from the Weed, down to Burial and Greenman, then up to Hi Wire. If we are still standing, then either back down to Twin Leaf or back up to Ash. Pizza and Brewing.

Cool. Hi-Wire and Altamont are the two that I haven't been to in the area, so I wasn't exactly sure where they were.

Don't blame you, Hi-Wire (for me) has 1 beverage that I like, sadly I really do like it, but Hi Wire still holds my Asheville Brewery record for the most drain pours in 1 night.

Edit: AND I feel the same way about Wedge, but darn it all, they have that ONE beer that I really really like.
