Brains have released NATO themed ales (Meerkale, Obeerma etc) for the NATO conference.

    Probably all shite though.

Are Brains the Calledonian/Belhaven of Wales would you say?

I've sort of enjoyed a couple of their beer when in wales on holiday but by and large found them a bit guff - Their IPA that they have in morrisons is a bit crap too. Not really tried many though. maybe Dark, their cask ipa and another one or two

I like their beers bottled and canned, as a slightly better alternative to supermarket lager though (cheap, refreshing and the SA Gold when chilled in the bottle is actually pretty good).

Cask-wise the quality is so up-and-down though. Weird texture and I don't think I've ever had a pint that tasted the same as the last. The IPA I actually had a soft spot for, mostly because I was a student and it was £1.99 a pint on cask, and also nice a fresh being so close to the brewery, with the cheapness meaning they had quite a good turnover.

And don't get me started on the "Brains Craft Brewery" though.

If you're ever in Wales I'd suggest Great Orme and Purple Moose in the north, and Tiny Rebel, Tomos Watkin and Waen (and more) in the South.

Well I'll give them a go, I was always a sucker for porter, even before I'd tried it.
( odd comment that, but ever since I read about it in The Hobbit .."Some called for ale, and some for porter, and one for coffee, and all of them for cakes." ..I knew then that I needed to drink porter, even nearly 40 years ago )

And here's summat that combines two of my main interests, beer and cake.

Yes I had that ale connection years before actually drinking
that & the hospitality of Beorn the changeling, the barrels that the dwarves escaped in
and then onto The Prancing Pony in the Fellowship.

That was then filled with an inbetween stage where I would lose myself in my dads old CAMRA guides and daydreams whilst eating these

and thinking when I could have a foaming pint myself

    I'd say that's a pretty fair comparison.

    Brains & Caledonian
have left me feeling letdown, nothing new with the midsized breweries that fill our supermarket shelves with bottles

    BUT ON CASK!

I used to love Brains bitter on cask same with 80/
The brains was a former shadow of itself & the 80, sorry but the only way to describe it is
    watered down to fuck
I had identical feelings with the Moorehouse's new brews

if you ask me our established breweries have lost touch of either what's going on
    or on their own output
