Heading to Charleston/Hilton Head

House of Brews, Bottles, The Charleston Beer Exchange and Total Wine. Make sure to stop by Westbrook and COAST.

 

I have lived on HHI since 1999 and will be able to assist on info for HHI. How long will you be in town?

I was just in HHI, best "bottle shop" is Whole Foods. For growlers go to The Lodge and Hilton Head Brewing Co (both are right next to each other). Since Growlers shut down, that is the best they have.

 

River Dog was the typical local beer I saw on HHI a few months back. An outdoor bar near the lighthouse had a couple beers of theirs and I think the Salty Dog's house beers are made by River Dog. We went to a place called Neo a little bit inland that had a small but craft-focused draft list and good food.

In Charleston, I would echo Westbrook and COAST recommendations. Charleston Beer Exchange of course. I picked up a bottle of Siberian Black Magic Panther at Bull Street Gourmet and Market about 3 months after it was released, so you may find some random gems there. If you just want to stock up on beer you can't get at home, Total Wine is your best bet.

 

I would also recommend stopping by Freehouse in Charleston. It's right on the Ashley river, very scenic, and they have live music on Fridays, food trucks and great beer.

This pretty much sums it up. Also, the new Kroger seems to always get super fresh Coast.

Whole foods has Holy City cans (have not seen elsewhere) and Maine Beer Co bottles.

If you want bottles of Imperial Biscotti Break, Donut Break or Citrus Ninja you will need to drive 30-45 into Beaufort or Savannah.

Are you looking for Cake? Bottles are all gone but there is one bar that has bottles if you really wanted a taste.

 

Lastly, as a side note.

Savannah just got a couple cases of Citrus Ninja and a bunch of other stuff you might be interested in. I work in Savannah and if you wanted me to mule beer not available on HHI (saving you the drive time) send me a message and we can talk in more detail.

 

Stopped by whole foods on hhi and am happy to report they have freehouse Ashley saison bottles and follys pride on draft.

 

Fitze, do you know if Conquest is distributed to the Charleston area?

 

I have not seen it in the Hilton Head/Beaufort/Savannah markets. Charleston I don't get to enough to answer. I'm sure others can chime in.

Thanks guys - appreciate all the feedback! So it sounds like Whole Foods/Kroger on HHI will be the place to stock up on some local goods for the long weekend. Any insight if they carry cans of Westbrook IPA and/or Gose?

 

Yes they both do. You'd be better off at whole foods IMHO.

 

Will be in Hilton Head next week. What are your bottle recommendations to purchase? Looking to get some beer I can't get back in Michigan. Cheers!
