I do have to explain what I do... otherwise "beer enthusiast" makes people hear "alcoholic"... which is unfortunate.

Have you ever been to a beer festival? We are nerds! Where else can a bunch of fat, sweaty guys with beards be the coolest people at a party? It's awesome.

I don't know any one that calls themselves a beer nerd/geek.

On a side note, I love fish tacos and I just really needed to say it.

Funny, this sounds like most of my discussions with my wife....

I never have, and never will call myself a beer nerd/geek/expert/etc.

I do however print out my avatar and associated stats and wear that on my chest when I go out. I let people find out themselves what kind of "beer" person I really am.

    Ladies love my beer points.

To be fair a bottle opener on your keychain just means alcoholic. I had one on there way before I got serious about beer.

I call myselves a beer nerd because to me it carries no negative connotation. I left caring about being called a nerd and the intended harm by those voicing it in high school. I don’t need euphemism such as technical savvy for nerd, and connoisseurs for snob to make me feel better. I love beer, enjoy sharing knowledge and product, relish understanding more and more about the details of the process such as chemistry of brewing, and think the beer community is the best I’ve ever been involved in.

I can't say I've ever called myself a beer geek, nerd or any other related tag. I'm just a guy that likes beer... a lot.

That said, if someone called me a beer nerd or beer geek, it wouldn't bother me. The shoe fits.

Yeah, I disagree. Over here a lot of people carry bottle openers regardless of the frequency with which they drink alcohol.

    1. People can't spell "palate" correctly and you want them to use some fancy pants French word with double consonants and a weird vowel cluster? Please.

    2. I don't think "connoisseur" is an accurate term for what I think most people on BA are anyway. The word means an expert or someone who is an authority on something. While certainly some people who are BAs fit that bill, I think most just love beer whether or not they could be objectively considered a know-it-all or not!

Maybe if you shortened it, it might fly--I do like the sound of "beer con."

    Cheers!

If someone wants to label me a beer geek, that's fine with me. Obviously, in HS and earlier the term "geek" tended to be a reference to the wrestling term "Pencil Necked Geek," but has now been appropriated by interests of all sorts: band geek, chorus geek, computer geek, etc. "Connoisseur" is pretencious implies intellectual superiority. I already know I'm intellectually superior and don't feel the need to rub others noses in it. I prefer the self-depricating term "geek." I use the term myself and am proud to wear it. I wave my Geek Flag high.

I've never found the need in anything I enjoy to profess to someone "I'm a [Fill in the blank]. I'm not even sure how that happens in a normal conversation.

Someone: You don't like Coors Light?
Me: Not particularly, I like a lot of beers, that's just not on the list.
    _______

Someone: You like craft beer huh?
    Me: Yes
    _______

Never once have I called myself a beer geek, nerd, advocate, enthusiast, connoisseur, or whatever. I don't understand why these phases even exist other than to seem more hip than the next man(or woman). My friend calls himself a fitness nut and a gym rat, I just tell people I work out.

True. Westy XII has no labels attached, and a lot of us are known to enjoy it.

    You just inspired me.

Next time I go to a beer festival, I am totally making a t-shirt with my Avatar, BA Username, and beer stats on it!

And if we all do it, we can identify each other at beer festivals, even though we've only met online.

My wife tells people I'm a beer snob (not cool :slight_frown:)
My friends refer to me as the good beer bitch (acceptable )
I refer to myself as a man without enough money to support my beer puchasing/cellaring/drinking problem :grimacing::flushed:
