Why do we call ourselves beer geeks or beer nerds?

Wait a minute.....so if a person walks around with a specific tool there is no correlation with the frequency that said person uses the tool? "Yeah, I disagree." And don't say pocket knife. Screwdriver etc. those tools have multiple uses. What else ya gonna use a bottle opener for?

When I was a kid and before I ever drank beer I used to keep a bottle opener on my keychain cuz I thought it was cool or something. Now, I actually drink beer and don't keep one on my keychain. I open my beer with a lighter, usually. I have the lighter cuz I smoke a lot. Evidence for and against your argument.

I like "beer con". I've also been called: "Oh, You're One Of Those Guys" which I enjoy.

I never do, though I've been given worse and less appropriate labels over the years. Beer geek and beer nerd are two I can work with.

I'm good at it now but when I was younger I always found a way to cut the shit out of my hand trying to get a bottle open with a lighter.

See, that's what I think the difference is: you just go work out. Your friend seems to embrace the whole experience, he likes being there, likes spending time there, likes the atmosphere and people. Same deal with us: our friends go to the bar for a beer, we go and get involved the whole experience.

The word "geek" no longer refers only to side-show freaks who bite the heads off chickens, and "nerd" has come to mean more than a Dilbertish brainiac. I think either can now refer to someone who is enthusiastic about an activity that is slightly out of the mainstream, whether that means beer or Dungeons and Dragons. (One of my favorite local bars is right next door to a "gamer" store [they sell the games and host nightly play sessions], the level of nerd-geekiness as the two worlds cross streams is sometimes awesome to behold:grimacing::grinning:)

You really do like your hyperboles, don't you? I'm arguing that carrying a certain tool does not necessitate its use on a frequent basis, in this case particularly the insinuation that it's an indicator of an addiction. There's also the thing that some people own and carry certain things on a "just in case" basis.

I'm not saying no alcoholic carries a bottle opener but we should be able to recognize the difference between what some do and what counts as a general tendency.

Agreed - I have a bike lock key on my key ring. The old beater bike for which the lock is for, actually gets used and locked up about once every two weeks.

"Beer nerd" has a less obnoxious connotation to it than "Beer connoisseur".

I think of a nerd, I think of playing video games all day with my high school friends.
I think of a connoisseur, I think of my rich uncle.

"Beer man" makes me think of the guy from There Will Be Blood, except as a brewer.

"Beer Adonis" is the preferred nomenclature… or “The Ultimate Beer Goliath” if you aren’t into the whole brevity thing.

If you say "Beer Can" with a British accent, you're also saying "Bacon" with a Jamaican accent. Try it.

+1 on the dislike of "advocate".

i pretty notorious for geeking out about beer and chewing people's ears off about beer who could really care less. process, ingredients, comparison of a beer to style, differences between styles, history...

also try to avoid the snobs and connoisseurs, but that's another point entirely.
