I live in Boston and saw a store tweet that these arrived today. Pt5 I wouldn't be shocked by as the weather is getting colder, but in general I think these are both months old. Any locals know if these might be recently brewed or what?

DCT doesn't get any love and just sits out here. I think it is a market that DH should think twice about whether or not they should be in although I don't want to lose out on Pt5!

Per the DH website, Plead the 5th is released in Feb, so not new

That double crooked tree could age well I suppose. But seriously. WTF. I hate when these companies can't get their shit together and get the customer the product ASAP.

I recently bought a Dark Horse IPA sample pack from the northern burbs in Chicago. The cardboard was all beat up and the beer tasted really old. Seriously considered writing them a complaint.

I grabbed a Double Crooked Tree from a shop in Milwaukee about a month ago. I knew it was a gamble since it didn't have a bottle date and their website said it was only released in February... It was a bad gamble and I was very disappointed I wasted the money on that. My advice is don't do it!

My advice is go for it, Double Crooked Tree ages very well.

Sounds like a distributor/store issue. Not sure the brewery had much to do with either of these complaints.

I totally disagree.... DCT does NOT age well!!! I just cracked my last one dated from Feb and it was pretty much a malt bomb. Barely any hop bite left..... And that was stored in my fridge the entire time. I could imagine how turned it would be at room temp

Now pt5 on the other hand.....

DCT does age well, but it has to be awhile IMO. I've had several year old DCT that's a nice barelywine at this point. Srs, not trolling lol. I imagine several month old DCT just tastes like old IPA. Wait a bit though and it's decent.

Yes it's better fresh of course, but this is one of the rare, perhaps singular instances of a DIPA aging well

DCT is a borderline American Barleywine, really. Plenty of backbone to hold up over time. Of course, the aromatic hops fade, but the aged version is pretty delicious.

That said, if someone in the supply chain is inept enough to be holding on to two Feb release beers that long, you also don't know how they've been treated. Honestly, I wouldn't buy. Don't want to support that kind of behavior, and you're not getting to try the beers as they were meant to be had, anyway.

I absolutely agree that it ages well. Dark Horse agrees. From their website:

"Although this beer is as cool as “The Fonz” when first purchased, it gets really mellow and smooth with some age. After a year or two stored in a cool dark place you’ll notice the heavy caramel and malt flavors are trying to sneak past the hops."

It sure does if you enjoy barelywines. I aged one and thought it was better than it was fresh. You will notice a ton of floating objects in the beer.

I just had double crooked tree at the brewery and it was fantastic! Yes it ages well. Also, if stores are just getting it, its on the distributor. Not the brewery

in the end it comes down to the brewery. Its on them to make sure they are getting quality service from the distributor. I used to blame the distributor but have since been taught by @Vav that this is not usually the right judgement.

What is the brewery gonna do? They cant just leave the distributor or force them to do something......ITs on the distributor..that is just fact..

That's pretty old too, by several months. But mine didn't taste that great when I got it right when it came out. Even the standard Crooked Tree didn't taste right. I couldn't help but think it was right when their show started airing...
