Number 23 in Avery's Barrel-Aged series, this is a Sour ale aged in Maderia wine barrels. Brewed with imported specialty Belgian and German malted barley, dark Belgian candy sugar, Sacchromyces, Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus and Pediococcus yesats.

Bottled on Sept 9th, 2014. Yielded 247 cases of 12oz bottles that will come in at 7.72%ABV. This will be a brewery only release, where 175 cases will be "shared" (public release?) and 72 cases will be "hoarded" (potentially reserved for their reserve members?).

Link to press release? I wasn't aware Avery had a reserve membership and I've never seen a straight up brewery only release from them. Also it seems weird it is already bottled and not scheduled for sale. Pump(KY)n and Pumpkin are the next two releases this month.

Yeah that seems odd. Avery has never released one of their Barrel-Aged series like this before

Shared v. hoarded- could that mean that "shared" cases are bottles that must be drank on-premises and "hoarded" cases may be purchased to take home?

ISO, never had the opportunity to try an Avery sour before

Pretty sure they've used that terminology with previous releases. I take "shared" to mean sold at the brewery during the release party, with remaining cases going into distribution. Where "hoarded" would be held back for future events, festivals, anniversary parties, etc.

Pretty sure an Avery rep told me this one is NOT going into distro.

There is no reserve membership. Quite a few of the BA releases never made it out of the brewery, Volunt Plus Erat being a recent example. I believe it depends on how many cases are produced.

I've never seen them use the "hoarding" terminology before. That's something new. My best guess is, 175 cases will be available to go at the brewery, and those 72 "hoarded" cases will be held back by Avery for GABF and other special events.

Isn't it determined by whether or not it sells out at the release? I thought it was always if "x" is available for sale at release, but only "y" sells, then "x-y" hits limited distro.

I think the real question here is where is black eye and barrel aged tweak?

They are still sitting on Black Eye and doing heat tests and such to see if there will be any problems.
BA Tweak is not released until Nov/Dec, I can't recall which at the moment.

This release qualifies for the "under 400 cases" release.
They are done differently. From what I was told.

This sounds awesome! I may have to see if a friend of mine can visit the brewery. Thanks for the info! I love Avery's barrel-aged beers.

My biggest question is where this info came from. I can't find anything on it anywhere else?!

They should have called it Carmen Antonii. I told Adam Avery I would check all of their Latin for them.

They've used hoarded before--several if not all releases. I'm guessing like you that Adam keeps a number back for himself and events.

The last under 400 cases was Opuntia and it saw normal distribution. With both Rumpkin and Pumpkyn releasing within the month, I'm surprised Avery would not announce this through their own channels. Maybe something for GABF or a dual release with one of the other two

Huh, well I guess I don't read those press releases too closely. Just find the bottle count and release date and done.

Oh, I'm aware of what they are doing out of fear of another black tot-esque incident. I'm just impatient.

I hear ya. I wouldn't hold my breath.
Hoping it will be out between Rumpkin and Tweak. More likely between Tweak and Jacob's or later.
