I live in a craft wasteland, most of you should know this about me by now. When bigfoot arrived, I bought my share and let it be... but it still hasn't sold out yet (the wastelanders know not what they miss) and I'm tempted to get more - but what about the amount of time this beer has been on the shelves? Should I be concerned about the chances of it being light-struck?

What a coincidence. Finished reading your message and saw this. Personally, I don't think you need to be worried about light-struck Bigfoot since the abv is relatively high, and it's meant for aging. But if you're concerned, reach past the front 4pack and see if there's any sitting in the back of the shelf. I sometimes do that when I'm looking through a cooler as well - even if the dates are the same in the back of the cooler or shelf, less light gets back there.

Id say negative. Unless its on a shelf directly in the window. I love me some bigfoot, and its still on shelves around here too. For some reason, I did not love this years taste as much as it has been in the past. Before the "the recipe hasnt changed, the flavor hasnt fallen off" bandwagon arrives, it just seemed to taste not as hoppy and more like raisins. I dont know if anyone else felt this way.

edit: I just did a 2010-2014 vertical, and 2011-2012 were my favorites.

It's always on the shelves everywhere in SC, just like FBS.

I've had a similar experience with previous year releases. I believe it all depends on when you drink it - immediately or after aging.

I bought year old Bigfoot once by mistake. I thought I was buying the new release, but I grabbed the previous year. As long as its not being stored in the front window display of the store, light shouldn't be an issue. Grab a pack from the back of the shelf if you want to just in case. I had a 2012 recently and it was drinking great.

Bigfoot needs time. Just drank the 2013, and it was still drinking too hot for me. In 1-2 years, should be perfect.

Are you talking 2014 or 2013? I happily picked up 2013 off the shelf last month with no concern of the light. Brown bottles and no worry about diminishing hop flavor, the beer will be fine.

3 years seems to be the sweet spot. Any sooner and it's too hoppy, much longer and the sweetness gets too strong.

Ill agree with you about the sweetspot. But too hoppy? is there even such a thing!?

a few years ago I had a '98. It was still hoppy! I was blown away.

If it is from earlier this year, I would not worry overly-much. If it is from last year, well... :flushed:

Most retailers (even the better retailers) have not installed UV filters in their overheads or coldbox lights.

P.S. I reckon you still live in BFE, MN? Even here in The Cities I see case of Bigfoot hangin' out. There are so many good options to choose from nowadays it ain't even funny. Why, back in my day as a youth... (geezer rant preempted. )

I sometimes see previous years Bigfoot sitting on shelves 2-3 years after release here in NM. If I already didn't have a stockpile for some future vertical (this is easily one of the cheapest verticals to do), I'd buy them up.

On another note, I just picked up two 2014 Narwhal 4-packs today. I'll drink one bottle, age 7.

Right on - Just grabbed my two Narwhal yesterday, last year was my first try of it, and I want to build verticals and experiment with aging - Narwhal and Bigfoot are my big players - that's partly why I want more bigfoot - I don't have a whole lot in the cellar. I can't have just one though, that's the thing, I need to at least do a side by side with last year, so there's one down from each stock, share a little, and damnit if they aren't just too tasty to enjoy - so I need a reasonable amount in the cellar

I almost wish I would have drank more of mine fresh, and bought more to save... I think I'm a newb. buying beers just to cellar them... seems like something I'd get called out as a noob for... damn good fresh, I was amazed.

I was actually planning on drinking two and cellaring 6, but they were soo good. I'm having a hard time building up my cellar because of stuff like that.

Exactly... I bought A LOT of expedition stout with the intention of cellaring MOST of it but when I really want a beer, and the only beer in the house is in the cellar... the cellar becomes the refrigerator!
