I didn't want to character map those umlaut letters at the moment.

Thank you for this write-up! I hope you have time to continue to share some of your beer drinking experiences while you are there (I'm very jealous). I'd like to recommend to you Hoppebräu's Vogel Wuid IPA. I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts if you have time. It can be found at Getränke Oase near the two famous art museums.

I've always wondered how München turned to Munich. Let alone Deutschland to Germany... especially when Bier translated so well!

I once heard that Germany is called Germany because that's where Germs come from, but I'm pretty sure that was a joke.

On a serious note, I believe one of the back Appendix-type chapters to Rick Steves' Germany has a page on why we call Germany Germany. What makes no sense to me is why we call "Bayern München" "Bayern Munich". That's just mixing things all up.

I haven't seen anyone from American comment on seeing the Paulaner Wiesn over here this year.

I will be consuming it next Saturday at an outdoor Oktoberfest event. I'll try to remember to post here afterwards.

I've commented on not seeing it after it had been pretty prominent for the past 2 years. Poor sales?

Maybe? I actually liked the 1 liter can that came with the Maß. I imagine sales were decent for those, because they moved to six packs. Then perhaps six pack sales were down?

Last year I saw 6 packs and a mixed 12 pack: Amber Märzen, Wies'n Fest, Helles, and Weizen. Just odd that it's so absent this year.

On the other hand, I've seen more Amber Märzen 12 packs this year than I've seen in the past few years -- all about the U.S. market "expectations?"

This probably has to do with the presence of Lowenbrau in the states back in the 70's and 80's.

Funny thing is -- they have the umlauts!

Hey -- isn't that Thomas Magnum's father? :grinning:

Although, just a little late in response.

Wait, what? I just watched the commercial again, "When you want the taste of a truly great American beer..."

    Really? :grinning:

To tell you the truth, I can remember drinking Miller Lowenbrau back when, then finding Swiss-brewed Lowenbrau (obviously not the same Munich brewery) and that's when I started recognizing the differences between European and U.S. beers -- no matter the label.

That was before my drinkin' days. I remember the jingle but didn't remember them being referred to as a "truly great American beer". Yes, nothing says "American" quite like the name "Löwenbräu".

You could probably ask @jesskidden about this, he knows more. As I recall, Miller decided to brew Lowenbrau in the states, therefore was considered an "American beer".

When I first clicked on this commercial, the text, background music came back like a former girlfriend. It ran quite heavily, and was truly a premium import/quasi brewed in USA beer. When you had a few extra dollars, you bought Lowenbrau.

I admit to buying it at the several drive thrus that didnt ask for ID (was in high school at the time). Much preferred it over Hamm's or Schlitz.

Here are the differences between the two Löwenbräus, at least, as claimed by Anheuser Busch* in a complaint to the FTC in 1977:

Right after that came Miller's counter-complaint that included the phrase "chemically-treated wood slats" for AB's beechwood aging process, protesting AB's use of the term "Natural", which also included Miller noting that AB "...mechanically injects carbon dioxide in its beer". (!)

AB countered that Miller used "...chemically modified hops to prevent sunstruck or skunky odors in Miller beer."

Most people, especially in the US, portray the deal as big bad Philip-Morris-owned Miller forcing the conservative German brewery into giving up their good name (like a schoolyard bully taking somebody's lunch money) but Michael Jackson noted, while discussing the lack of any "special renown" of the Löwenbräu (then the country's largest exported beer) in Germany:

    * The same company, now under different ownership, that
currently brews both Bass Ale and Beck's Beer in the US.
