You are probably right but the 6 bottles just feels right...I also used @kgncfl's as a template since he was the creator of the LICC

I agree with this too, and wasn't saying we should do more, just that someone can if they like as there is no 'requirement' to do it with exactly 6.

Is there any kind of "rule" (for lack of a better term) as far as SUPER local beers go? A new brewery opened up really close to me (I'm not sure when but it's probably been within the last year) and they are pretty much only located in my small city. They've fairly recently started growler fills, and I was gonna go try a couple of their beers to see if I'd personally feel ok with sharing some of their stuff -- the only downside is, like I said they are incredibly local, and as such their beers only have like.... 5 ratings on here, and most (all?) of them are 3.75 or lower. There's only two I had in mind for trying, but didn't know if something like those should possibly be skipped for something a little more well known. Like I said I'd obviously try it first, but even then...

For me I wouldn't get too caught up in the ratings. If you think it is solid beer (and matches your targets preferences or "wheel house") that is local or limited distro that is what this group is mainly about. That and porch destruction.

    Cheers!

That is definitely fine - there is one nano-brewery near me that I have already shipped stuff from as part of the Locals, plus another where the guy basically brews out of his house and only sells on Saturdays from his driveway and on Sunday at the local farmer's market (but he DOES bottle), and another place about an hour away that bottles only a small subset of what they brew (and sells only at the brewery), but pretty much everything I've had has been delicious.

I think if the beer has very few reviews, but they're good, and the beer matches your target's style preference, go for it.

Up to 2 bottles can be returned per your request. The growler was filled last night.

Oh man, speaking of growlers, I came home today and found a growler of dirtwolf in my fridge. Pretty cool, my first growler, but hopefully will be able to reuse it. My dad goes to some kind of get together where people make tons of food with peppers as the central theme, and Al of pizza boy brewing goes each year and donates some kegs, so he got a fill from that.

Pro: free growler, good beer in it
Con: Will probably go bad before I get a chance to drink it since it wasn't "properly" filled :slight_frown: (I won't get a chance to drink it until Friday, and it was just filled straight from the keg open-air essentially)

As long as there isn't much headspace and it was sealed well, it should be fine until Friday, just keep it cold.

I'm definitely not an expert, but if you avoid opening it then it might last decently. Once you open it you'll definitely have to drink it all though..

Good to know, yeah it's filled maybe a little over halfway, and it is in my mini fridge which keeps around 45-50. I would love to be able to crack it open Friday. As long as it doesn't go COMPLETELY bad, I honestly don't mind it not being 100% super fresh. I've just a noob to growlers and have been under the impression that they need to be killed off pretty much super fast

I was unaware that growlers were filled any other way. I have quite a few growlers at home and have visited many a brewer that filled the growlers that way. Is there another method of filling growlers that would support a longer-than-2-4-days-until-it's-opened-and-consumed window?

Dirtwolf is definitely tasty. I think that I'd make up an excuse... "I only hit the snooze button three times today. Nine minutes saved! Time to celebrate with a Dirtwolf!"

I just finished packing up my first growlers ever for shipment today. As I understand it, if you go to a brewery that has (this is probably not the exact name) a bottom-fill CO2 purge system, they basically pump the air out of the growler and fill it with CO2, then when they fill it with beer the "empty space" still has CO2, as opposed to oxygen (or air, I guess). And then it lasts a looooong time.

Based on research, a week plus shouldn't be a problem if the growler is sealed well, ones with those flip top (like Grolsch beer, if you know what that is) work better. But based on experience, the one 64oz growler with a screw top that I probably received about 12 days after it was filled was absolutely fine. However, the 12 ounces or so that I did NOT finish on day 1 were pretty bad a day later.

The other way of filling growlers is to counter pressure fill them. Basically, you fill the growler with CO2, purging it of oxygen, then fill it up with beer from the bottom, keeping the CO2 on top of the beer, and once its filled up you cap it off as normal. This cuts down on the amount of contact with oxygen that the beer has, which is for the most part why beer goes bad. Also, since its CO2 (which is what keg beer is pressurized with), the beer doesn't go flat as the CO2 in the beer doesn't leak into the headspace.
