I just picked up my quart sized bottle for $6.99 the other day. Thinking about cracking it open tonight.

I think it's the math... Sucks used to be $10 a sixer here (72oz), now it's $7 for 32oz which equates to $15.75 per six pack. That said, it hasn't stopped me from buying it (as there are no six packs). Well played Lagunitas, well played.

It is the case of the "math" but there are a number of BAs who simply don't want to drink 32 ounces in one sitting. If they had somebody to share the beer with that would be OK but no every person or every drinking experience will have somebody else to share with.

Having Sucks in individual 12 ounce bottles solves two issues:
    • The "math" issue
    • Not needing somebody to share with when you only want to drink one beer (and that one beer = 12 ounces)
    Cheers!

I think Lagunitas spoiled everyone with the price of their Sucks 6 packs. But more math for everyone to ease the pain. Sucks in 32 oz quart bottles for $7 is the equivalent of $4.81 for a bomber (22 oz). Everyone is always applauding $5 bombers of Hop Stoopid and Sucks is actually cheaper (in this format) than Hop Stoopid and people are still complaining about price?
Not to mention people will gladly lay out (as do i) $8.99 for a 22 oz of Enjoy By, Ruin 10 or Maharaja and be happy just to be able to find it. So this leave Sucks almost 50% cheaper than many other solid DIPAs.
And for those that can't finish 32 oz. in one sitting and have nobody to share with….. open something else.

I've heard, and I can't confirm if true, but if the last number of the code is a 1, it's from Cali. 2, and it's from Illinois.

"Everyone is always applauding $5 bombers of Hop Stoopid.." I take exception to the characterization of "everyone". I personally refuse to pay $5.00 for a 22 ounce bomber.

The proper metric for "math" is price per ounce. $5.00 for 22 ounces translates to $0.22 per ounce.

From the post above: "Sucks used to be $10 a sixer here (72oz)". That translates to $0.14 per ounce.

It has absolutely nothing to do with being "spoiled" but everything to do with economics and the ability to properly do "math". We all get to choose how to properly spend our money. If you feel you are "spoiled" and therefore Lagunitas (or more accurately the beer retailer) deserves to be paid more money, then I suppose you can give them your 5 bucks. I would encourage you to re-think this aspect and consider the proper metric of price per ounce but at the end of the day this is your decision.

There is an old saying that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

    Cheers!

I hear ya, Jack. Numbers don't lie. But most people on BA are willing to pay extra for Sucks because it's a damn good beer. Maybe they get confused by the math and comparisons because they are finishing 32 oz of 7.85% beer.

I had a bottle in my hand yesterday and put it back because of the math. I like Laganuitas and fresh Sucks. but for $7.99 I could have bought 32 oz. of Sucks or I could have paid $7.99 for 4 16 oz. cans of Griffin Claw's Norms Raggedy Ass IPA.

The 32 oz bottle of Sucks is hilarious and just makes me like Lagunitas even more. A lot of breweries claim to be funky or free spirited, but Lagunitas has stayed true to their offbeat tone and maintained a real sense of humor as it has grown. If you don't like the 32 oz packaging then don't buy it. But you will. . . because it is a kick ass beer. . . and you know it. Or maybe I'm wrong and you won't, but that just leaves more for me, so win - win.

Also, if you want to question their marketing or business philosophy I think the numbers speak for themselves - they were the 5th best selling craft brewer in the US in 2012. Not too bad considering the guys that kept them away from number one were the likes of Boston Beer (Sam Adams) and Sierra Nevada.

Personally, I am just happy it became a staple rather than a fill in for Brown Shugga'

Drink up and enjoy my friends!

Instead of saying you won't spend $5 on a bomber, just say you won't buy bombers- which is something I try to avoid as well. I've never seen a bomber worth buying for less then $5. Now if they could put it in a forty then I would feel like more of a rummy drinking from it.

You are free to drink and buy as much Sucks as you want at the inflated quart price of $.25 an ounce, I am free to buy as many six packs of Sucks as I want for $.14 an ounce, and Lagunitias is free to package and sell their beer in a manner in which they see fit.

    Ain't capitalism grand?!?!?!?!

    Cheers!

Oh, I agree man, my post was more in reply to others criticizing the marketing behind it or the price of the beer in general. I think there are a number of reasons that buying a 6-pack of Sucks makes more sense than buying the 32 oz bottle, but I also think that Lagunitas knows what they are doing when it comes to marketing and business. I too prefer the 6-pack but if all it comes out in is a 32 oz then I will undoubtedly pick it up on occasion because I think the quality within justifies the added expense, only less frequently perhaps. Also, as I said earlier, the humor is not lost on me....seeing a quality DIPA in the same format as King Cobra...pretty funny.

Yea, I did the math and passed last night, but I will probably pick one up at some point, because i do get a kick out of the packaging.

"I've never seen a bomber worth buying for less then $5." I have, I have purchased a number of Victory Helios bombers and they have always been much less than $5.00; one beer store sold it for $3.49 for several years.

    Cheers!

When I lived in Porltand bombers were insanely cheap at Plaid Pantry, espesh during a sale. I remember getting Pyramid IPA bombers for 1.99 and Hop Stupid for 2.99. Crazy.

Sucks just showed up in NJ, and I liked the format a lot. 32oz is a perfect amount of beer for one session. The last time I remember drinking 32oz bottles was Yeungling Premium, which always felt like the perfect sized beer to bring to a party in my early 20s. I remember always hunting for the elusive Yeungling LAGER 32oz, which was the superior product.

Back to Sucks the taste was...good, but not as revelatory as the first time I had it. It poured out with an impressive, creamy head but there was something *flat* about the taste. The hops didn't have that palate-smashing Novocain numbing effect that they once did.

Also I had just enjoyed a daisy-fresh growler of Kane Head High the night before and...well...yeah. Sucks doesn't Suck but it's not the beer I once thought it was.
