I love IPA'S and Belgian styles, but the Belgian IPA always leaves me scratching my head. Granted I have not had any highly rated ones. So what's a good readily available Belgian IPA to start with?

Lagunitas A Little Sumpin' Wild is hands down the best Belgian IPA I've ever had, but it's unfortunately just a summer seasonal. Flying Dog Raging Bitch is awesome too, and year-round. I tend to like American interpretations of the style much more then those from Belgium. I love the aggressively hopped ones..

Thanks for the suggestions. I am heading out to look for a couple of them now. Hopefully I can find them, it seems it could be an interesting style if I can adapt to the hopiness with the Belgian yeast.

    Start here. Or here.
The Chouffe is probably my favorite so far, but A Little Sumpin' Wild is also great—especially fresh.
For me this is a real hit-or-miss style, but I really love the hits.

It's Gnome Week! This thread certainly prompted me to bust open my Hobbelen. Yes, that is a Chouffe gnome cap and gnome keychain...

+1 to Terrapin Monk's Revenge for American interpretations- great sweet hops, and also the the sticky red Ragin' Bitch. But the complex bittering and dryness of this Chouffe is just awesome.

I know it's not readily available, but if you can trade for a growler of anything from haymarket, the few they did when I was there were by far the best belgian IPAs I have ever had.

I'm a big fan of Troubadour Magma...solid brew. I've seen it a few places where I live. I assume you could find it around New England.

I'm thinking the Sumpin' Wild might've been old too because it's a July release. I'd try it again in a month or so when it's released and super fresh, but I'm glad you thought it was good..

There's a terrific BIPA from Quebec called Lupulus from Charlevoix. It's probably one of the best beers coming out of Canada, I think. I'm not sure how much Charlevoix stuff makes its way down to the US, but it's totally worth seeking out.
