De Halve Maan is going to build a pipeline to pump beer from their brewery in the center of Bruges to the bottling factory outside the city walls. Basically to cut down truck traffic in the medieval center.

"The idea is born of environmental and quality of life concerns, and not economic ones,"

    Gotta love Belgian priorities.

This is awesome. I can see the headlines now "Four men under investigation for siphoning off beer from the De Halve Maan beer pipeline".
But on a more serious note, if those Keystone pipeline people would commit to building a tap-able beer pipeline as well as an oil/gas pipeline, I don't think they would have as much trouble getting approvals from local communities.

Neat idea from a great brewer. I wonder how it will work. Will there be multiple lines, will they flush lines between the Quad and the Triple?

Ah, I like the one proposed in the US back in 1888 better:

Actually many pre-Pro US breweries had beer pipelines (many above ground, overhead) which ran from the "Government" fermentation cellars to the bottling lines or racking areas. The original Federal tax on beer was literally paid "per barrel" - each barrel (and half, quarter, sixth, eighth, etc). had a tax stamp affixed to. After that, the beer in those kegs could be bottled (either by the brewery or an independent bottler) once they had traveled over public road (or something like that).

As bottled beer became more popular and breweries industrialized the Feds allowed the beer tax to be applied by measuring the beer from the cellar to the bottling/racking areas with meters, but for some reason kept the "over public road" aspect. At least, that how I remember it (I'm sure a detail or two is wrong).

You can see the "pipe tunnel" crossing the intersection of Ferry and Freeman diagonally on this 1903 map of the old Ballantine Lager brewery.

They claim to have 4 lines so they can have some on and some off to clean and maintain.

    http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/26/burges-underground-beer-pipeline/

In order to cut down on the number of trucks it puts on the streets, Brouwerij De Halve Maan is working with the city of Bruges to construct an underground beer pipeline. While the brewing still happens at its original site, filtration, bottling and shipping operations were moved outside of town in 2010. To get the tasty beverages from point A to point B, dozens of trucks go back and forth each day, but not for much longer. Folks familiar with the Cleveland, Ohio-based Great Lakes Brewing Company may recall that it uses an underground system to send its suds from a production facility to a taproom/pub across the street. The effort in Belgium will be much more elaborate though, replacing the 3-mile tanker route with 1.8 miles of polyethylene pipe, and cutting transit time to between 15 and 20 minutes. De Halve Maan claims the system can send out 6,000 liters per hour -- on top of cutting traffic and reducing emissions. What's more, the brewery (er, brouwerij) will foot the bill for installation and road repairs, reducing the financial burden on the city.
