I just checked out The Scurvy Dog's website. Why in the living fuck have I not ever heard of nor been to this place?!

One more spot that's solid on beer is The Grange on the corner of Dean St. and Browdway (definitely walkable from downtown if that's where you're staying. Solid taps. People I trust claim the food is excellent. It's all vegetarian, so it's difficult for me, a man who enjoys well prepared meat, to drop coin on dinner there. I've had some of their appetizers though and they are really good.

Forgot that place - yeah, the food is good and I am a fellow carnivore. Can get crowded sometimes, and honestly didn't notice the beer list since we hit more or less brunch time. Sometimes the vegetarian stuff provides a good break in the routine, but it has to be done right. La Grange does it well.

As a beer geek and omnivore, I can confirm that the Grange was satisfying for both food and drinks when I was there. I think they had Lolita and Flower Power on tap. They also have a nice cocktail and whiskey list. I enjoy eating veggie every now and then and this place was perfect for that.

I went to Trinity for a beer tonight and can't complain, their double IPA's are average if not above average. I can vouch for the food being "terrible" (did not eat there tonight) but don't understand the hatred for their beer. Obviously YMMV. There are definitely better choices city-wide but if you are pregaming for an arena event or awaiting the exodus (as I was), then Trinity suits me just fine.

Sorry to derail the thread, just wanted to put it out there...

YES! thanks so much. This is exactly the kind of place I was looking for. Definitely gonna go here.

Also I have no idea where I'm staying, but I will have a car. Going to be in town for cancer walk which is at Rogers Williams Park, so I'm sure our hotel is right around there.

I've always found Trinity beers to be average brewpub quality. The RIS was good at one point, but awful the last time I had it. I've had better luck with the hoppy and less complex beers. But I agree with you, a good spot to hit before or after an event.

I do see the awards for best RIS back in the day (late 90s?) on the wall so I understand how the downfall of this could leave fans with a sour taste in their mouth (no pun intended). Fortunately I've only partaken of their their IPA/double IPAs and Redrum. The Marzen is ok too.

If you don't mind a short drive you should visit Buzzards Bay Brewery in Westport, Ma. Great place, great beers.

FYI @wyckyd_sceptre, on 9/27 there is a Waterfire in Providence. Waterfires are large outdoor events that happen downtown and attract tons of people. Basically they light a bunch of campfires in pillars that run through the river and into the basin. It's quite beautiful if you haven't seen it. However, it makes downtown very crowded. Roads get blocked off and there's tons of people on foot. While the majority of the beer spots I recommended are outside of the downtown area, every bar and restaurant in the city seems to be a bit busier on a Waterfire night. So do yourself a favor and give yourself a bit of extra time for getting around and do make reservations if you're planning on having dinner anywhere in particular (especially if that place is anywhere near the river).

Enjoy the city, you picked a great time to come! And please report back on how things were.

    Salute!

So we're here in Providence and I love this place already. From Chicago and Pittsburgh, but we're looking to move and Providence might be high on the list already. Wife wants to go back to school and I'm a cook/beer retail guy so seems like we'd both easily fit in.

We're staying in the Financial District according to the street signs and decided just to walk around when we got in yesterday. Went into a beer/wine/liquor store called "Eno" I think. Nice, small selection. If wife wasn't watching I would've scooped up Blackberry Albert for sure.

Stopped in Union Station just cause we were walking past. Nice place. Mediocre beer, but it was cold so we had two. Also watched like 10 servers stand around doing nothing.

Went to dinner at Local 121 and it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Great charcuterie, really great cocktails, loved the ambiance, and Led Zeppelin played twice so that's all I could ask for.

Today's agenda is probably Scurvy Dog, Nikkis Liquor, Waterfire, and Nicks on Broadway for dinner.

    Thanks for all the help!

Unfortunately we didn't drive and aren't checking bags so I can't really bring home anything. Unless I find something really special at Nikkis.

Any suggestions as to places to day drink? Preferably with outdoor seating, a patio, or a nice view?

Glad to hear you've enjoyed things thus far. Prediction: After a trip to Nikki's, the Scurvy and Waterfire, you're going to want to move here, ha ha.

I know I sound like a broken record promoting them (I swear I don't work there!), but if you like charcuterie then you absolutely must check out New Rivers. It's right along the water and you will be near it when you're at Waterfire. Dinner reservations are probably out of the question at this point, but, if you went to their little bar, say at like 4:00, you'd definitely be able to try their charcuterie and have a beer or two (no beer on draft, but a solid bottle selection). Just a suggestion. Their charcuterie is really special and since you seem to appreciate such things, I wouldn't feel right not saying it, ha ha!

EDIT: Just saw your question regarding spots for day drinking. Go to The Point Tavern on Wickenden St. It's right near the Wickenden pub (don't be fooled, it's not good). They have a handful of decent taps, nothing stellar, but have a cool little patio out back that is really nice this time of year. Also, while their beer selection is so-so, you would be wise to check out Nick A Nees. I've spent more hours than I could possibly count at Nick a Nees. Ridiculously chill spot with an awesome jukebox where it's 10 songs for $1.
