And in Italian it's called "Monaco di Baviera!"
What else can we add to the list?

New bier Friday - the oil can of Paulaner came with its own Maßkrug

That's how I ended up with my Maßkrug as well! I do wish other Munich brewers would follow suit with this promotion...

PS - That's a pretty good looking shelf of Bier right there!

That certainly does not look like a pale Wies'n Fest.

No, it was not even reddish.. I was surprised at the darkness of it.

And the smell... OMFG! I could smell the beer outside even.. yum

Hacker-Pschorr's was never pale though, was it? I have never seen a pale H-P Oktoberfest in any event.

Did it look that dark? I know we've been around and round about this, but really -- have you ever seen it that dark at the Fest?
    Copper.
    That, my friend, is melanoidin.

    No.

It is always lighter in color and coppery - this was dark brown.

This photo was taken outside in the afternoon sun...

That's the same as they export to the U.S. -- probably the same that's in the case you picture above. I can see the small type on the label: Amber Märzen. H-P, Paulaner, and Spaten are the only 3 Munich breweries I know that are still brewing the darker, coppery color beer.

It was emanating from the bottle and my glass last night after I poured the Spaten. It's a perfect representation of what separates the best Oktoberfests from the pretenders.

Technically not in Munich, and not one of the darker ones, but I consider Ayinger an Amber Marzen.

I left out Ayinger because of the Munich connection, and it's still not as dark as the other 3.

Yep, figured that. I only mentioned it because it's the only other German import we get here in the US that I can of that is amber in color. A few ticks lower on the SRM scale certainly, but still amber to me.

I don't much care about the technicalities, but I am going to get several more bottles of this bier.

No it didn't look that dark to me, I chalked that up to lighting and so on. My photos don't always perfectly capture the look of the bier (although N8 is saying that to his eye it was darker than normal, so I'll take his word for that). I had an H-P Oktoberfest earlier this month (shoulda got a pic!) and it looked about as I remember. I was only at Oktoberfest once, and it was recently, and the H-P looked like so:

@mjtierney2 - The beer I have was much darker - it would be hard to see thru it, unlike the beer in the photo above. It has a dopplebock brown color.
