    New GLARUS Sunday!

So this conversation totally happened a couple weeks back...
My manager: Call my cell if you need anything next week, I won't be in the office
    Me: Going anywhere special?
Mgr: Up to Wisconsin to visit my parents and in-laws
Me: ... so I'm guessing that means you're familiar with New Glarus?
Mgr (quickly gets an understanding twinkle in his eye) Of course!
Me: Would it be unprofessional if I asked you to go on a beer run for me while you're on vacation?
    Mgr: Not at all!

So now I'm sitting with about the best mix of New Glarus one could ask for. I have no idea how into beer he is but there's no Spotted Cow here. I have some extended family in Wisconsin as well so I've been fortunate enough to have a bottle or two from time to time; four of the five he brought are new for me. This is the first and I'm very much looking forward to trying some more of their fruit beers in the coming weeks as well

Only my second beer in the Oud Bruin style and being a fan of all things sour I definitely like it. Not extremely complex but extremely tasty with mouthwatering acidity; straight fours across the board.
    Cheers!

    Greetings NBSer's,
And thanks UtopiaJane for "getting this party started". I'm gonna' review a beer that, in my mind, is more of a spring/early summer beer for me, but it matches the glorious weather we've been experiencing for the past few days and I need to kill it before it's well past it's best by date.
A smaller eg. of style, but it holds it's own attributes.

    Hey what's going on?!?

Man what a busy weekend, and time to enjoy some brews. Not going to be digging the best America has to offer for awhile so this seems like a good candidate...

    aw geez... it's another IPA.....

    -----------------------------------

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Deep classic crystal clear pale amber. Light hues of lemon and bronze orange color, with fine white and pinhead hollow carbonation rising from the bottom. Head formation is a little smaller than most for the style, reaching three fingers tall with off white color, and a small retention thick cap of about a finger tall. Still a very decent looker regardless..

Aroma hints towards slight florals and a bit of pine. Some tropical hop mushy qualities, but a bit of pine seems to sneak in over it. Juiced body it seems is coming from this aroma, and a much simple toned down caramel malt sweetness which is nice. Pretty inviting and solid.

Palate comes in surprisingly. Much sweeter on first sip as some caramel and alcohol like hot sweetness more like a sugar DIPA seems to be coming. However, it quickly disappears and the hops begin talking throughout the palate. Mid palate hits with a good minty and powder pine sense, and a tropical note of mango and orange comes in. Good quick finish with a long lasting pine and spruce flavor. Some warm earthy tones mix with a big of tropical and seem to bounce off each other, playfully, if not integrating cooperatively. It's a fun fight as tropic vs pine/earth fight for supremacy and the run continues. Juiced hinted body seems to take a backseat to a simple malted backbone, that almost gets a bit watery. Flavors still manage to coat everywhere.

Overall it's a fun beer, and the hop angle is interesting if perhaps not really showcasing Citra and Amarillo at it's ideal. Still the ride and bounce is pretty darn fun.

This one starts out easy and linear then branches off into something a bit more challenging. Pears, peppers and dark toast?
It's a beautiful brew and a beautiful day but in hindsight might not want to have this with left over birthday cake. (My baby turned 8 yesterday and that much pink frosting just can't be ignored!)

    Greetings fellow NBSers

Sunny and high 60s this late morning in eastern Washington. Spent yesterday doing housework while listening to college football on the radio. Things went as I expected for my teams: UW hung with Stanford but their anemic passing game couldn't capitalize on their defence keeping Stanford from running away with it. How does a Chris Peterson-coached QB finish with 98 yards passing? EWU won their first game that wasn't a shootout with a basketball-style score in convincing fashion and on the road. No Seahawks today so I am watching the Tennessee Titans do the impossible - score a touchdown thrown by Charlie Whitehurst.

After a breakfast of French toast, I decided to take my chances with a bottle of porter that had been sitting in a closet, forgotten, for perhaps more than 2 years.
    New Ancient Beer Sunday, anyone?

Turned out pretty good. I'm a little bummed it's been discontinued, as I'd have liked to try a fresher example and see if unintended cellaring had actually improved it or not!

    New Saison Sunday!

It felt really strange walking around outside earlier today in 80 degree weather with the leaves of many of the trees around here having already changed ino the colors of autumn. I don't like it. But it feels like good time to get to some Saisons I had intended to drink in the warmer weather.

We'll see if I can get through all three of these throughout the course of the day, or if I'll tire of them after the first two. Up first is Austin Street Brewery Saison Hoppu. Released a few weeks ago, this is only the 2nd bottle release from Austin Street, the first being a Brett IPA. Can you guess what this one is?

Poured into my Austin Street glassware. A straw colored ale, slightly cloudy from the yeast sediment. Aroma is lemon zest, some pear, and you can pick up that Brett funk. Decent amount of carbonation. Tastes lemony, slightly spicy/peppery, and with a little bit of barnyard funk. A really nice choice for an unusually hot day.

Hello NBSers! Here in Massachusetts it is spectacularly, and unseasonably warm at 80 plus. I am slowing down my beer consumption of late, but didn't want to miss NBS. The warmth made me think not of New England fall, and turning leaves but of live oaks, Spanish moss and magnolias. This new beer seemed the right choice for such a day. Sometimes nature brings the bayou to you....go with it.

The beer is smooth as polished ebony which perfectly matches the color. Nary a hint of bitterness, but nice dry cocoa, coffee and bready flavors. Despite the color this goes down easy on a warm day. The head is off white with micro fine bubbles and massive lacing. I should have bought a sixer of this from my friends at the Craft Beer Cellar in Nashua.

I decided to include this in a NBS post. This is my wife's new favorite beer. I really enjoy it as well even though I haven't had much of the particular style. Low ABV makes it easy to drink. Like my review said, unfortunately its not available readily in my area or I could consume a case within a week. We actually drank both cans I had on hand. Thanks to @Evango and @thufflife for the cans.

Jack's Abby and their Smoked Oktoberfest. The smoke and tart toffee are a perfect combo in this great beer. The ABV isn't listed on the .5 liter bottle, however, the body is fairly light and leads to high drinkability. If you're looking for the run of the mill Marzen, then pass this by. It's more Rauchbier, which I happen to be enjoying...

Awesome brew from an outstanding Amero-Belgian institution. So good we did an Ommegang beer tasting at my wedding reception. Smartly, and er... perhaps sadly, we forewent this as one of the selections. For good reason, no?

BTW- fishtank? Terrarium? I keep a albino South African clawed frog in one of those. Curious to see the life-form behind the beer.

Greetings and a blessed Sabbath to you; prophets of pilsners and disciples of dunkels, it’s time for another one my of self-indulgent NBS reviews. The subject of today’s sermon? Plaid button-up shirts and Canadian brew, eh.

    Unibroue’s Raftman

Poured hard into a Duvel tulip, then backed off to avoid yeast base and spillage onto counter.

Sight: Pumpkin-like orange, brown hues toward the top underneath the head. Hazy. Head is light, white, whipped- almost egg-flip foam. Vortex of carbonation from bottom of glass when first poured. Lace left is big and patchy, with no recognizable or cool word to describe it.

Aroma: Bready, yeasty wafting off head. A bit of malt and cracker, but very subtle hop presence.

Taste: Perhaps hay-ish start, light malt and yeasty fruit traces. A touch of spice, perhaps due to the hops… who knows. A tiny dose of caramel from the whisky malt. I could have told you, however, that this was of the Belgian school of brewing.

Mouthfeel: Medium minus, but great bubble. Refreshing, glad I got a 750mL and not a 12 oz.

Overall: Great, refreshing brew from my favorite Canadians, eh.

And now for something else in plaid:

    Hello NBS'ers!

Started today with a 500 ml bottle of Smog City Coffee Porter.

    Wow!

Biggest coffee attack I've had in a beer (followed by BP's Victory at Sea). The beer rounds out and becomes more complex as it warms, with lots of nice chocolate and malt notes. Mouthfeel is somehow thinish despite huge flavors, which is appropriate for the style.

If coffee beers are your thing, you must give this a try.

Music selection: The Patti Smith Group.

Lazy Sunday over here watching a lot of NFL RedZone before the Eagles kick off shortly. Those birds have been getting lucky and just getting by this year I hope it continues today vs the 49ers I am not sold on them being great yet as most folks seem to be. Although I am sold that this is an fantastic Oktoberfest.

Only one new beer this weekend, and due to self beyond my control, I had it yesterday...

Seasonally appropriate; much better than I expected... :sunglasses:

Not usually a brown ale guy - browns I lean toward most are quads, barleywines, old ales...

I do dig on some pumpkin though - rustic/vegetal or sweet/spiced - I've got a few faves I count on each year...
