Craft beer is completely misunderstood over here and is often used only to refer to small scale keg brewing! As generally used it simply means expensive and messed around with.Practically all of our 1472 (according to the Daily Telegraph) breweries are craft.

Cool article, if anyone's interested, there's a great (by my estimation) documentary on Netflix called "Spinning Plates" that goes into interesting detail about Iowa's oldest (Breitbach's Country Dining).

The White Horse Tavern in Newport, RI is quite old by US standards (late 1600s I believe). I've never been, but I have a feeling it's more focused on being a restaurant than a bar/tavern (especially judging by the food menu and the prices).

Too bad Long Grove is now basically a ghost town. I live about 25 mins from here, but it ain't even worth it.

Okay, so I've been to the oldest pub in London, Salisbury, Dublin, and Illinois -- what of it? :grinning:

Honestly, I live over here and am always interested in our history -- I can imagine living where you are and being just as interested.

Really? Casualty of the economy? I always enjoyed that tavern, but their beer selection was pretty thin most of the time.

I'm a sucker for "historic" locations, but the writing was just too snarky for me.

Apparently, the Green Parrot in Key West is the oldest in Florida. I would have thought something in and around St Augustine would have fit the bill, since it is "Americas Oldest city, founded in 1569". I guess pirates and Portuguese people didnt drink? I have been to the Green Parrot, and I assure you nothing has changed decor-wise in that place. Talk about dive bar.

Neat article, debating whether or not to add "Have a beer at the Oldest bar in the US" to my bucket list now.

Established in 1835 as the “Cherry Wood Bar” of the Lahr Luxury Hotel, and issued Indiana’s first liquor license, this is in fact Indiana’s oldest bar. The “Cherry Wood Bar” was later renamed the Knickerbocker Saloon in 1874 when the areas first player piano was introduced. The Knickerbocker's player piano was a technological wonder in its day. A gentleman could stop in; get a shave, haircut, shot and a brew.
The Knickerbocker boasts a guest list including; President Grant, Mark Twain, Al Capone, and even Neil Armstrong.

White Horse Tavern opened in 1673, so I think it's the oldest on the list. And check it out for lunch. Prices are more reasonable and they actually have a house DIPA brewed for them by Harpoon (I think) that is delicious. Bar area was cool, we ate in the dining room though. Worth a trip across the bridge.

On the inside one is convinced that it is older than dirt, about to fall down, and if the candles lighting the place got knocked over it would go up like a match. My wife had her path to the door in mind in case of fire.
