Question of etiquette: Is it okay to require some sort of signature on delivery? (Not necessarily the target – just a signature from somebody responsible. An "indirect signature" in FedEx-speak.)

After having a box I sent go missing from someone's porch last year, I always require a signature when trading unless the recipient specifically asks me not to, but with a BIF there obviously isn't any opportunity for them to do so.

Sorry everyone, I've not been feeling well lately and just now starting to get my back legs under me. Sorry for the lack of activity and hints.

Hint #1: Shipping to a state that is smaller than mine in both land mass and population

 

I don't think it's rude to request a signature. Sometimes it can make things difficult though when people are at work and nobody is home to sign for it. I prefer not to have the shipping company hold on to my beer boxes and longer than they have to.

This is why I prefer to have my boxes shipped to my work, because I know I'll always be here Monday-Friday during their delivery hours. I don't have to worry about it sitting in my mail room at home, or getting too cold or hot depending on the elements. That's just my preference though and I do have the luxury of my work not caring what gets shipped here.

 

First You led me on a hunt looking up the filming locations of Josie and the ***** Cats trying to see if it had any in common with Perfect Storm. Now I just think you facebook stalked someone's interests?

 

I prefer not having to sign for the package because it is just more difficult. We aren't home much during the day. If it's cold outside I usually have it shipped to my wife's work in case there is a chance of freezing.

 

I don't think it's bad form, but in my case I can say it is unnecessary. Especially with FedEx, I'm at the 6pm part of their route and am home by then (even with UPS it's ok, my wife is usually around to bring it right in).

 

I also prefer not having to sign, never had a problem where I'm located with 50ish boxes received. Boxes usually arrive in the AM and I work close enough to home that I can stop by at lunchtime to bring the box in.

 

Your target might figure you out, or you can certainly out yourself a day or two before I guess and see what they think. The few times I've shipped I haven't done that, and incoming I live in a rural area where they leave pretty much anything by the front door (probably signed for fewer than 5 items in my lifetime)

If something requires a signature (alcohol or not), I redirect the package to a holding facility where I can pick up the package at my convenience.
