I could be completely off-base here, but while we're on the topic, I thought maybe I should just drop this here... because of the past completed sales of JCN and 7 x 750's of 2011 Blabaer in the past 2 months. Sketched me out for sure.

Blabaer would be also be extremely difficult to fake, IMO.

While we are on the topic, can I still tick the counterfeit JCN?

How would you know if you have never had it? (Im guessing that most people paying 250++ for a bottle would be first-timers)

THIS- hard to know if you have a counterfeit if you have nothing to compare it to.

If someone was going to rip you off I doubt they would go through the trouble of trying to blend an exact replica. That bottle of M that recently went for like 1,300 would be a real quick payday. As the buyer If you open it and its filled with brown water you really have no recourse. Pretty shady and a definite reason I would be weary of buying wales from unknown sources

Not to mention that for legality reasons, all bottles sold are for the collectible glassware, not the contents. And if it's a fake M, it's more than likely genuine glass.

While that would be shitty, it's not systemic. Most people don't have a handy supply of M bottles to refill. You could also dispute payment on eBay by claiming the item was not in the advertised condition (unopened). Someone could get away with it once and then there'd be a big thread warning people away from all but the most trusted vendors - basically a one-time scam.

The JC issue is frightening because many of the scammed don't even realize they've been scammed, even after drinking the beer. :slight_frown:

You'd be better off doing this with Pliny the Younger. Since the growler is a swing-top, the buyer would literally have no recourse as the container is unaltered. While the M bottles are sold as collectible glassware, the argument for their value is that they are in 'mint' (i.e. unopened) condition. It's like Star Wars action figures in and out of the packaging...

The thing is that you should be able to tell the difference. JC tastes like Classic Gueuze, except with a bit of vinous (maybe tannic, I'm not a wine person) harshness on the finish. I'm reasonably confident that I could tell them apart, and I think that even a naive person ought to be able to based on reviews and the like. Now, maybe they wouldn't look up reviews to compare, but they always could.

I think that the whole "it's basically Classic Gueuze" thing is meant more as an indictment of the cost relative to Classic Gueuze, when it's pretty arguably no better, and not importantly different. It is, however, clearly different.

That's a good point. You'd have to list it as "used" or you'd be liable. Of course, with a good blend, or a subbed beer that's similar, you'd fool a first-timer. The JCN is even easier/more worrisome indeed.

Hmmmm...lets throw the disclaimers out there first, like "I'm no Loon expert" and "your mileage may vary"

The dozen or so Cantillons I've held in my hands had labels that were printed on a matte paper stock, not the gloss (reflecting light from overhead-see the pics) paper on these bottles shown in the auctions. And the thing that really throws my radar spinning is the fact there are SCRATCHES on the paper label. That only happens with newer computer generated paper stock. Need proof? Take a butter knife or fingernail to one of your bottles. There shouldn't be a "bright white" underneath. The same goes with the edges. Need some documentation? Theres a BUY-IT-NOW with these flaws shown clearly.

The supply may be linked to how many classic Geuze are on the shelf and how much toner is in the cartridges.
For as hard to get as this supposedly was, there seems to be no supply problem here. Notice how the Nomad image has been reduced GREATLY to avoid further scrutiny?

I work on a daily basis with a large format printer and the images its generates. We have to discard them if they get scratched...

Lets wrap this thought with a politically-correct blanket of "allegedly"

Thanks for the info Chris. These bottles haven't permeated the market to the point where recourse from the trader would be out of reach. The market for these types of bottles is very small, and the amount that change hands is even smaller. I feel like many of the responses here are from those without a dog in the fight, it comes off as uninformed and extraneous commentary that slows down threads like this..and ultimately gets them locked/purged, depriving the forum of useful information. For the record, the taste between JCN and Classic Gueuze is markedly different to anyone who ought to be sampling a JCN. Its easy for me to believe much of the talk about JCN being "the same as classic gueuze" is from those who really have no business making such allegations. If you're buying JCN, I would sure hope you've tried classic gueuze before.. if not, bravo, but again- a highly unlikely scenario. I'd be hard pressed to imagine this wasn't an isolated incident of an opportunist who exploited a "glitch" in the system. As MasterSki pointed out above, this really was the perfect scenario for this. For those with JCN, check your bottles to ensure the typeface is smooth, and report back if not (or pursue action with the originating party). For those with no shot of ever trying/buying/trading for a JCN, please don't take this the wrong way, but "move it along, there's nothing to see here"..

I'll do an A/B comparison in the next couple weeks and report back. That being said, I've seen "experts" think Blabaer was Lou Pepe Kriek when tasted blind, so you may be overestimating the discrimination of the average user's palate.

That Hop-One guy has sold something like 10 bottles of 2011 Blabaer with more up for auction. That just seems terribly unlikely to me.
