This is for people like me, with a more modest cellar, other hobbies and priorities, and not nearly as "e-cool" as those with JCN.

Fair enough! The difference between JCN and CG should definitely be smaller than that, though I thought the difference was pretty obvious. I was also splitting a 750 two ways, if it showed up at a tasting where everyone got 2 ounces and there was a bunch of groupthink going on I could easily see people being fooled.

Very odd, there are now more pictures of the bottle for sale on the bay. Seems that Hop-One frequents BA...

Agree, unless it is Jeppe himself or someone with the keys to the storage at Olbutikken...

While JCN is probably the perfect beer to counterfeit it wouldn't be very hard or costly for someone with a decent skill level in photoshop/illustrator to create an M replica, sell it on ebay for $1k+ under a fake account and disappear. I think I could even dig up enough info to make the tag they came with.

    Don't give people ideas!

That being said, I was trying to make the point that a 'convincing' M counterfeit would be a lot more work, and it'd be unlikely that multiple fakes could flood eBay without raising serious suspicions.

The thing is, taste/appearance doesn't really matter to somebody who has never had it before. Which is precisely the kind of person who is going to spend $1500 on a bottle of M. Fill that bottle up with King Henry and a splash of something else to mask it, and whomever drinks it will be like "wow that really is the most incredible thing I've ever tasted!".

You could probably do this numerous times before somebody figured it out. So 20K later, you get bounced from Ebay, whereby you just go create a new account and do it with something else. People run more difficult scams for a hell of a lot less money than that in life.

The M label would be MUCH more difficult, albeit not impossible I suppose. However, the taste would be damn near impossible to replicate, as Alex mentioned already.

It's really a shame it has come to this. I hope we find out who it is and get together and break the bottle over his head.

Excellent point - Anyone can copy the majority of Kuhnhenns labels.
    Why does this surprise anyone?

This condescending statement may actually motivate me to buy a bottle no matter the cost. When I do, do I get a special lapel pin, or patch or something that I'll need to show other members of the club?

Why does it surprise anyone? For me at least, and maybe I am naive on the issue, but I would never thought someone would stoop this low and take advantage of people in this regard.

The person making the counterfeit bottles deserves to know what it feels like to have a counterfeit bottle shoved up their ass.

Just checked some of the Cantillon bottles in my basement, all were obtained from the source:
Blabaer 11: matte paper (so indeed, the glossy ones on ebay seem to be counterfeit bottles)
Foufoune 11: glossy paper (reflects light)
    JCN: glossy paper
Lou Pepe kriek 05 and 09: glossy paper
    DQ: matte paper
    Vigneronne 2003: glossy paper
pre-2000 bottles (geuzes, kriek): matte paper
Zwanze 08,09 and 2010: matte paper (although the 2010 is a bit shiny)
    Mamouche: glossy paper

So almost there is no logic here, more 50-50 depending on the beer. Most newer bottles have glossy (shiny) labels though. Makes me wonder which dozen bottles you had (10 blabaers 2011 and 2 DQ maybe  )

This Magnitude? - It's beer. It's not like he claimed someone died.
I could make a 2010 kuhnhenns BA Barleywine label in my sleep and no one would know.
Until you drank it of course.
    4th D would be tough

That's the main problem with faking these things, you can only do it so many times. But an M comes up twice a few times a year, and the work required would be pretty much one-off.

Anyway, yet more reason to avoid eBay for high-end beers.

yeah, there was a "picture of your latest haul topic" for bragging, but for that I had to take pictures of the bottles and post them, and I am too lazy to do so  . Thought this topic was way easier :sunglasses:

I have a few bottles at home that are probably glossy, when I get a chance tonight I'll do some "before/after" scratch pictures. Unless someone else beats me to it.
