To all the BAs in the PNW: I'm halfway through what my wife has turned into a beercation [Portland & Seattle] and I am blown away by the beer prices in Portland. Holy crap. Beers on tap that would cost me $7 - $8 in the NYC suburbs are $5 - $5.50 here. And bombers of highly rated IPAs for $3.99 - $4.99. WHOA. I'M IN HEAVEN. And I don't know how I'm going to bring back everything I've already bought. Just wanted to let all of you know that you've got something special here in Portland.

Glad you're enjoying your visit. If you plan to take beer home with you, definitely buy it in OR. WA prices are lower than NY, but still higher than OR.

Glad your having a good time. We had two great conversations with people out of state at hair of the dog. Good times.

Plus... there's no sales tax in Oregon. If you're putting together a sizeable purchase to take home, that 9% to 10% savings can make a difference.

As for the price differential between NY and Oregon, what can I say? You'll find similar differences when it comes to real estate prices, food costs, cable, internet service... you name it. NYC and the burbs are just expensive places to live, and, well... Oregon isn't. Enjoy it while you can!

Have you been to Seattle yet? I highly recommend Rueben's Brews and Fremont if you still can. Both are standouts in Seattle.

Thanks for the post. It's always good to hear people's experiences in our cities.

If you're flying out of PDX and want to minimize your amount of checked baggage keep in mind that Laurelwood and Rogue both have airport locations that sell bottles & growlers which can be carried on since they're located past security. There's also two Made in Oregon outposts post-security that have ~300 bottles including stuff from Commons, Upright, and Logsdons.

$5-5.50? That's still expensive for here. I'm used to paying $3-4 for my favorite drafts around town!

Thanx - Visited Seattle 5 yrs. ago but just for 2 days before a cruise and my pre-trip research told me there were more beers that I wanted in OR than in WA that I wanted to take home.

For clarification - my wife doesn't drink. She did this for my b-day. I do love her.
And I never realized how annoying sales tax is until I didn't have to pay it here in OR. It's just nice to bring a $3.99 purchase to the register and have the cashier say "that'll be $3.99".

If you're going to be in Seattle on Saturday, make sure to hit Fremont's grand opening of their newly expanded Urban Beer Garden --- the taplist looks fantastic and should be a good time.

Home in the NE now. Youse guys out there have it made - what selection of great beers.
Brought home 31 containers of beer in the luggage - 16 cans, 15 bottles. 10 of the bottles were bombers and 8 of the cans were 16 oz. If it sounds like too much, it wasn't since I was flying first class [70 lb. limit per suitcase] with airline miles. One suitcase was 67 lbs., another was 61 and a small one didn't have much so it wasn't anywhere near the other two. All made it home safely with each bottled beer individually wrapped in bubble wrap, shoved in a dirty sock or wrapped in a towel and placed in the middle of the suitcase with dirty clothing under, around and on top so if anybody wanted to steal one, they'd have to deal with dirty laundry first. The cans were just placed in the middle of the suitcase with dirty clothing around as well. Can't wait to get back someday.

Glad to hear you had a good time. You picked the right time of year to visit with all the fresh hop stuff floating around right now.
