We've got our hotel rooms booked for a Thanksgiving trip up to Ghent. We're staying there for a couple days (visiting the Christmas Markt in Brugges and (of course) Westvleteren for a case of XII) and then on to Amsterdam for a couple days.

I went to Westvleteren in a January and it was a very pretty drive through snow-covered farmland. Pretty, pretty time to be out that way.

We were there back at the end of March/beginning of Apr (it's an easy 5 hr trip by car) - can't wait.

We stopped overnight in Aachen to break the trip up for our then 1.5 year old. We then went from Aachen to Westvleteren and on from there to Chimay, where we stayed overnight again. It was a very nice drive, although the Belgians could have plowed their roads a little bit better. :grinning:

It would be really cool to take a small detour and visit Brasserie de Rochefort and maybe hit up Bastogne to pay your respects to the men who fought and died there 70 yrs ago.

    Hey kids....

I survived yet another sojourn to the Fatherland and environs. The Fest was decent but busy ; best part of the Munich portion was chilling at Andechs. Had some nice beers at Cafe Abseits in Bamberg..... Good times in Maastricht and Amsterdam, plus a visit to Westvleteren and Struise.... A more in-depth write up will follow at some point shortly....

    Prosit! !

Ok... trip recap.... first 4 days were spent in München... Arrive 21Sep and after settling into my room, I met old friend @UncleAl at his hotel. I usually go to the Weisses Braühaus on the first Sunday, but we were just down the street from the Augustiner Bräustub'n, so we had lunch there... and my first Maß... [IMG]

After lunch we made our way to the Wiesn, where we had seats reserved in the Schottenhammel tent.... Back for my 30th Fest....

Partied there for the night.... and had a nightcap later back at the Aug Bräu. Monday, Al and I toured around the city checking out WWII sites.... had a quick lunch at Forschungsbräu (alas, no St Jakobus...), then later went back to The Fest for another Maß. AL left Tuesday, and I went down to Andechs. Their Doppelbock is still fantastic vom Faß... [IMG]

I stopped at Liebick Getränke-markt on the way back for some bottles (Backbonesplitter and Pax) before partying at the Hofbräu tent... Wednesday was my last day in München... I walked around the city a bit, then laxed at the Wiesn... Had some Bier und Knoblauchwürst, then hit Weisses for a nightcap....

    Next, on to Bamberg....

Arrived Bamberg 25Sep for 4 nights... Had a quick Spezial lunch then visited Krombach... nice castle there, but missed Antlabräu after I misread their hours on their website. Back to Bamberg where I quaffed a couple of Schlenkerla Märzens, and enjoyed a Bamberger Zwiebel...

Mmmm.... Next day I visited Rothenburg, mainly to pay my respects to the recently departed innkeepers I had stayed with for 20 years.... did get a sip of Wein in the town square, part of an old legend from the Thirty Years War...

Back in Bamberg that night, I hit Café Abseits, for some nice German DIPAs, like Backbone Splitter!

Next day, back to Rothenburg for a bit more personal business, along with some Bajuvator Doppelbock at the Gasthof Butz...

Went back to Abseits upon returning to Bamberg, and tried more DIPAs, like SHIPA Polaris...

My last day I got a bike and rode out to Drosendorf, Merkendorf and Memmelsdorf.... A couple I tried were Göller Urstoff

    and Wagner Jübilaumsbier...

Last night in Bamberg I hit Abseits once more, for a Bauernplatter and a Weiherer Bock.....

It was a great time in Bamberg..... On to Maastricht next....

I liked the entire post... but hey, it's great you drank those beers, but what I care about is what you thought of how they tasted, especially the Backbone Splitter and the SHIPA Polaris. BTW, do you know that Polaris is a new German hop that's at 21% AA? That's maybe the bitterest hop... ever. Come on, .... please.

I have rated the Amarsi, Polaris, Schoppe XPA and Drunken Sailor here on BA.... Ratings 4.12, 4.00, 3.97 and 4.10 respectively... All real nice... Had the Backbone, but didn't rate it there.... was late and I'd had a few others already. Have a bottle I brought back to properly rate sometime soon... All were quite bitter and rindy, though I thought the Polaris had a minty/menthol type character to it... All good, but I liked the Amarsi and Drunken Sailor a bit more than the others.... Backbone - TBA... Prosit!!

The German IPA I liked more than any other was Hoppebräu's Vogel Wuid IPA, which was very hoppy/floral on the nose but had very little bitterness. To me it was the perfect marriage, dare I say an American IPA with a German "twist". Though not an IPA, Wippra's Kellerbier was like that as well, and was also a beer I loved drinking. The bitterness overload doesn't do too much for me...after a while it's ABIPA Syndrome......

I appreciate you writing the reviews, but hey, that's not in the German forum. I post my reviews of beers here in this forum... you are my audience, my fellow German forumites, not the great unwashed massed of BA. I do post the reviews later in the reviews section of BA, but it's not exactly what I write here; rather, the reviews I post there are more impersonal in scope. Please do us the favor of putting them here for us as a record in the German forum; otherwise, for me, they don't exist, and I personally object to having to hunt them all down separately, disjointedness.
