Age does nothing but bad things to this beer.

For pointing out a beer that ages poorly in the beer aging forum? Doubt it.

I actually misread your post and thought it said "Age does nothing but bad things to beer." Didn't mean to be a dick, sorry dude!

I am anxiously waiting for this, my favorite founders beer to come out this year. I usually by a few 4 packs a year and can't stop drinking it. Perhaps this year I can try to set some aside for a little while.

Backwoods Bastard is perfect fresh, brilliant bourbon and vanilla taste. I like to drink my fresh bottles chilled to ~50 degrees and the taste is bold.

I have been recently drinking some aged for a year and while the notes are still there the beer is more desirable at fridge temp 38 degrees and does not get more pleasant as it warms. I still enjoyed it but I would say drink one fresh then start aging them.

Hmmm, there's quite a variety of opinion in this thread. I have a few of these cellared and I'm looking forward to finding out for myself if these age well or not.

Put me in the fresh camp though I love this beer and will take it as I can get it.

A little bit of age does no harm but like so many similarily aged beers of this type it doesn't take long for the (whisky) barrel to completely dominate and envelope.

It's possible you'll still be able to find some in December in Minneapolis. Otherwise, I may be able to grab you some. PM me closer to the release and I'll try to grab you a 4pk.

I personally love this beer fresh and not so much with age.

I agree completely. I've even done 4 of them side by side (fresh, 1 yr, 2 yr, 3 yr). All of them were terrific, but I decided that day that I would never age this beer again. The bourbon barrel makes this one special, and those are the flavors that fade.

As many have already mentioned, this beer is better fresh to 1 year after bottling. I had a 2012 bottle 4 weeks ago and it lacked the vanilla and barrel tones that it had when fresh.
I do wish this beer was released twice a year. It is just too damn good.
